Kelly M Shaw

by Kelly M Shaw on 22 May 2007 - 20:05

I didn't want to hijack anyone's thread so I am starting this one. I really hope someone can let me know which one would be best to use on pups and adult GSD's. Ivomec verses Safe Guard. I would like to hear any and all opinions on this, because I am no longer using Heart Guard. I just gave my dog's Ivomec, but would like to know the difference, and which one is best.

Thanks in advance

Kelly,

Pardon me if it sounds too obvious, but have you read the fine print that comes with the meds, to see their disclaimers and which parasites they treat?  I switched from Heart Guard to Interceptor because Interceptor protects against whip worms and Heart Guard does not.  Perhaps you could contact the manufacturer's customer service phone line and sift through the sales pitch to get the facts.

Hopefully someone can respond to you that has first hand experience with the products, but if not, then you can probably dig up some facts on your own.

I use Interceptor for the same reasons as SHB, neither ivermectin -Ivermec, nor fenbendazole-Safeguard,covers whipworms.

I use Interceptor to help protect against heartworm and whips, etc. I used to use Heartgard, but my vet switched us to Interceptor, maybe because we have a white American Eskimo, and white breeds can be more sensitive to ivermectin. I now have been using Interceptor on all my dogs, it works very well as protection in my opinion.

ok, I just did a little more research and apparently Safeguard will cover whipworms but not as many stages as Interceptor

Personally I use Ivermectin, (prevents Heartworm and works as a treatment for Hook, Round, & Whipworm) when given at the higher dosage. I prefer to use a very small dose of Ivermectin for heartworm prevention, along with Pyrantel Pamoate (strongid-t), for roundworm & hookworm.

If ever needed I would use Praziquantel for tapeworms(Trade Winds, Tape Worm Tabs), contains same active ingredients as Droncit sold by RX only. There are very few products that kill more then one species of tapeworm. Praziquantel will kill the two main species in dogs, Fenbendazole (Safe Guard, only kills one species of tapeworm)

Ivermectin has been reported to supposedly cause fertility problems when used in dogs, this is why I prefer to use a smaller dose of Ivermectin for Heartworm prevention only.

I agree with Badpuppy   that is the way I do it   start with pyrantel pam on pups unless at older u find a whip .....Ivemec is used for many things, scabies, and Dermadectic mange , with side effects which can be the fertility problem.....It would be great to find a holistic method for all ,as I hate all the chemicals in dogs body.,.....that really worked.....

Thanks for everyone's opinions, I will look further into everything that was mentioned. Right now I have them all on Ivomec, and I sprayed my yard with Nematodes, which eat any kind of grub's, any kind of larvae, ticks, etc. It has been working as far as the ticks are concerned(because I can see them). I also have them all on bug off through www.springtimeinc.com and that has been working as well, and it's all natural. I switched to Ivomec because I don't and will never trust Heart Guard again. Like yellowrose of Texas, I am trying to get away from all the chemical use's beause it's not good for my dog's, JMO.  Again thanks for everyone's response!!

Just out of curiousity, why are you against heartguard?  You know the ingredients in it are ivermectin and pyrantel?
