Is anyone familiar with this club by any chance? It's the closest to where I live, about 40 minutes away.

http://www.foxtal.com/fox_valley_police_&_schutzhund_club.htm

They have quite a bit of detailed information on their web site, but still have a few general questions if anyone cares to comment. They say they are an all-breed Schutzhund club. Is this common? Not sure  it really matters, just wondering. The other question does worry me a bit. You have to be voted in as a member--is this common with Schutzhund clubs? I thought anyone was welcome to join. I'm thinking this club may be too exclusive for a novice like myself. (I'd feel pretty bad if I was rejected.)

Most schutzhund clubs are all breed and it is very common for a club to vote on new members, usually after a trial period.  The fit has to be right for everyone.  Also, a helper can only work so many dogs in a night & clubs don't want to waste space on someone who perhaps doesn't share the same level of commitment.  They need to be able to weed out someone who only wants to work a dog in protection rather than all three areas.  It's not uncommon to run into yahoos who only want a biting dog.  The club membership needs a way to protect itself from idiots like that.

Sue, thanks for the explanation. I've exchanged a few e-mails with the president of the club and she said because of the individual time they spend with some of the novices, they want to make sure the person is committed before allowing them to join. Pretty much the same thing you said and it makes sense. They offer a 4 session evaluation of your dog to test how worthy the dog is for Schutzhund training. And it only cost $50. Seems like a real bargain in comparison to what I paid several weeks ago to have a guy throw a sleeve in my dog's face.

Having to be voted on and approved for membership is pretty normal for clubs.  As Sue said, clubs want to make sure the new person will not only be a good fit, but also be willing to commit the time needed to title a dog.  My club asks that a prospective member come out for at least 4 weeks without a dog (we sometimes make exceptions for people coming from other clubs) before they can apply  for membership.  Then they must wait another 4 weeks before they are voted on.  Members are also on probation for the first year.  We test the dogs for free though an evaluation fee is pretty normal.

50 dollars is pretty cheap price. I wanted to join up with Misty Ridge (mistyridge.com). they want 75 dollars a week and after 6 months they would vote you in or out. good luck

According to the web site if they vote you in you get a $50 credit towards the first year's membership which is $150. After the first year dues are only $75 a year. Sounds very reasonable to me.

triodegirl, I looked in your profile to send email but I can't find it. I know we have emailed before about Grando pups.

I am thinking about organizing some SchH training in my area, I don't think we are that far apart.

Send me an email.  I don't have any details set yet, but we would start with a seminar by Steve House to get the word out and then work on training times from there.

I dont like the idea of being voted on to be able to be a member.   Im not saying the clubs that do this are bad....just not what I like.

I think the TD or whoever is in charge should just tell the person "you dont show up enough to make it worth while"......."You only want to do certain parts of the sport and that wont work" or "your big mouth pisses people off".

voting is to much like survivor.

Raven, It may feel uncomfortable to be voted on, but most clubs do this for the well being of the club. My club votes too. Suppose that an egotistical snot shows up at club with helper skills and lots of experience. Do you tolerate his big head and coddle his ego in exchange for his skills? Or do you decide that it's not worth the bother? That's a heavy load to throw on the TD as it impacts everyone. In any case there is often no 'right, answer. Conflicts between people can tear a club to pieces. At my club we consider the character of the individual and not just how 'serious' he/she is about the sport. Yvette

A concept I had not heard of till I came to the East coat and tried to join a couple of clubs in my area, I have never made it past "the Secret Vote."

Good luck, but if you don't make it, don't feel like the Lone Ranger.

LOL
