Anyone know about Crohns disease in the German Shepherd?  I have an aquaintance that says her puppy has crohns disease?  I want her to get a second oppinion!  I am not so sure it is crohns but maybe a filthy environment!  I have been to her house and it is gross!

I Have this disease, I have never heard of it in dogs tho.  I have heard of dogs getting IBD/IBS.  Crohn's is an Auto Immune disease.  How is it gross?  Loose stools?  That could be cause by IBD/IBS, pancreatic problems and many other problems.

I Would get a second opinion.

Good Luck

my dog had (Perianal Fistula) it might be what your dog has.  German Shepherds are hit most by this  disease. Ask your vet if this is what you dog has.  There are whole web sites about this disease.  MY dog had it for about 3 years before i put him down.  We tried everything.  I dont think there is any cure for it. They dont know why dogs get it, and it can be very costly to treat.  I remeber we used a cream called pro topic ( did not really help) watched his diet ( no meat) and sit baths.  I remeber my vet telling me that this perianal fistula is the same as Crohns Disease in hummans.  sorry to hear your dog has this,  Ron

I always thought that PF was something to do with the anal glands and there was a surgery to take them out which can either cure/help PF? If i remember correctly there is some type of surgery tho, I thought i heard somethign when i worked at the vet office.

But if PF is the same as Crohn's in humans then a surgery wouldnt help because crohn's is a autoimmune disease so with that being said and assuming PF is an autoimmune disease (like crohn's)the fistulas would still come back after the surgery
