6 wks

There are many different products out there.  I like the ones that take care of round, ring, hook and whip worms.

Why not just ask your vet?  Those people are sometimes knowledgable about these issues.

Yes, for sure ask your vet's opinion first.

But as a general rule, I start at 5 wks and then every ten days until they go home or they are 12 weeks old. StrongidT is what I use.  It is always good to take a sample in first just to make sure if you have anything or not and to see what it is.  If I see any problems with stools inbetween, I take another sample in and have it specificly checked for coccidia and giardia. Some vet's do not run this type of stool check and send it out to a lab to look for them. The reason for every 10 days is, that is the hatching cycle of most intestinal paracites and since the medications do not kill the eggs, it is important to catch the new one as they hatch.

Most puppies have round worms, even if the mother did not have any worms prior to conception. There is a phenom, that is passed down from mother to daughter and the hormones from being pregnant "wake up" the sleeping round worms and they are transfered to the puppies.  Not all dams have this problem, so it is always good to do a stool check first, before medicating.

Hope that helps some!

As a breeder here is my schedule on deworming pups:

2 weeks old

4 weeks old

6 weeks old

8 weeks old

and of course, always get a stool sample by your vet done first, before. I always use Nemex-2, which takes care of Hook and Round worms. I use the De-Worm series for Tape and Whip worms. For the Nemex-2, you administer 5 cc's or 5ml's per 10lbs of body weight.

Hope this helps.

We do a similar schedule on our litters.......

2 weeks old,  3 weeks old,  4 weeks old,  6 weeks old, &  8 weeks old.

YES....always have them Vet checked and have their stool samples checked.  We also ONLY use Nemex-2.  for puppies.

Also similar with my schedule - I worm, when the puppies are 2,4,6,8 weeks old.  I also worm the mother a time or two during this.  The wormer I use is Strongid, or Nemex2.  I also give them one full week of Panacur, every day from 5-6 weeks.  OR I give them one full week of Albon, every day from 5-6 weeks to prevent/treat coccidea - coccidea causes diarrhea in pups, is easy for them to  pick up, easy to treat - but the diarrhea can kill a pup very quickly.  I've avoided problems by treating for it regardless if they have it or not.

Molly.......good point to also cover!!

ABSOLUTELY worm the "mother" also.....we usually worm her along with her puppies on the 2nd, 4th, & 6th week.

We also use Albon with every litter regardless of symptoms......as a preventative.....nice to hear that other breeders do too!

Coccidia is a type of parasite as well, can be found in old farm ground, I've been told by several vets. Albon is a smart idea, but can only be given with an rx.

Actually you can order Albon without RX - I get a gallon of it at Lambriarvet.com.  Never had to get a vet perscription.
