Looking for opinions on this dogs coat.  I'm seeing a lot of questions on the board about long vs plush, and it brought him to mind.  Yes, he's mine...and YES, before anyone starts...HE'S NEUTERED!!! :-)  And NO, there was no stacking involved, he stands like this naturally.  :-)

He has a very thick coat, and I find we have to brush him out alot.

Anyway, here's his pic.

The link doesn't work if I copy /paste, but if I got the right dog by adding the numbers behind one of my dogs, I am pretty sure he would be a long coat. He is pretty.

This link works:

<><> He's a handsome boy. What'd ya have to go and snip him for? I plan to breed my longcoat to an American show lines bitch :D  Believe it or not, I was asked by a guy who has a female from  the Tucker-Covy Hill (?) show lines. I met the female. Super nice personality but taller than my male and as skinny as a Whippet. I offered to give the guy a couple bags of dogfood if he needed it. Try to imagine how those pups would look.

Anyway, your male does look good. He appears to be a longcoat, but his hair isn't as long as some. My boy has about 3-4 inches of fringe/feathering on the back of his forelegs when his coat is fully grown out.

Good looking boy! What is his undercoat like?  Borderline coated I would say, depending on undercoat.

This is my boy Chaos.  He just turned 1 year old on May 8th.  He is considered a plush/long coat, and has a very thick undercoat.  My breeder that does his toe nails and cleans him up for me before our shows, said he has a very thick undercoat for being a plush/long coat.  Still learning to stack him right, but here's his latest picture from today.  He is NOT as big as you may think, lol.  He is only 70.5 lbs.  He just looks big!

Thanks for all the info.  His undercoat is very thick, but short (to me anyway)! LOL  We had him neutered because he was monorchid (sp?), and was told it was a genetic problem.  Didn't want to pass that on. :-)

If in doubt, you can always take a cheek swab and have any GSD tested to see if it is a coat or if it carries the longcoat gene recessively. Takes all the guesswork out of the equation and you can identify the coat and carrier status of newborns if you want. All puppies out of a coat will be carriers of the coat gene and some will also be coats IF the other parent also carries the gene.

Looks very bordeline to me - but the very plushy tail would indicate long-coat to me.  However, I'll bet some show-line dogs with coats like this are shown trimmed...  he would be considered "long-stock" coat which in the past was allowed for breeding - now no longer.  He is a beautiful dog.

Requiring a DNA swab would sure prevent trimming and showing coats, wouldn't it?
