I also am feeding my male German Shepherd the Sierra Mountain lamb TOTW...his coat has greatly improved and the black on him (he is a dark blk/tan) has gotten VERY black. There use to be a red tinge to the black that was on him. After switching him to the TOTW lamb, the red tinge went away. He is on his 3rd bag. I am very happy with how he is doing.

I also couldn't be more satisfied with the TOTW Sierra Lamb. I don't think I would ever change, unless he develops a problem with lamb, in which case I might go to the Pacific Stream, or possibly raw. But, if he can't have chicken, the cost of raw could be a bit prohibitive.
I know sable pups change colour like crazy, but he got way darker than expected, and only in a matter of weeks after the food change, now that you mention it (could of course be coincidence).

Thanks! Here is a shot from just a couple days ago, with light directly on his face, so he looks much lighter than normal, but you can see him better. I can't wait to see how his coat evolves... Plus he's got awesome confidence and drive.

Sorry to go off topic... back to food! In addition to TOTW, I mix in a couple spoons of plain yogurt on the days he doesn't get Bio-k. I haven't started giving him any other supplements or salmon oil/vit e yet. I had thought about the Solid Gold seameal however.

I dont know why people think that feeding raw is so expensive. I think its actually cheaper. Bagged food has become outragiously expensive and still cant compare to raw. But thats jmo. If you want to feed raw then do your homework and check out where you can get your meat cheap. Walmart sells leg quarters 10lbs for 5.99 I think. Ive even called around to different butchers to see what they could offer me.
I switch from raw to bagged once in awhile just as something different and I will say Core makes my dogs breathe smell terrible. Its like they have gone and eaten some poop or something. YUCKY!
Iams used to be an EXCELLENT food during the 80's. And if I remember right when the two partners sold IAMS, one went and started Bil Jac.
I read that someone feeds Barking at the Moon. What happened to that food. Used to be great (It should have been at 70.00 a bag) I used to feed it to my Neo rescues. I looked on the bag a while back and saw that the ingredients had changed there too. It was great now its like all the others. I saw last week that Merrick came out with a bison grain free. Anyone feed that?
And lets not forget Canidae. Tried and true. Hasnt changed much over the years. Still cost effective to fee and now they have a grain free. Go Canidae!

Bhaugh - can you suggest a cost effective and nutritionally balanced way to feed raw that doesn't involve chicken? I am 99% positive that he has an extreme sensitivity to it. I also live in a small town (pop. 10,000) in the Kootenay Mountains, so supply isn't ideal... of anything. Ideas are very welcome as I would like to do what's best for him. Thanks!

Phaedra.....dogs can also do very well on Lamb or Goat.
Are there any sheep or goat farmers close by?? The overall cost of the meat is sometimes less expensive than other meat sources.
...just a thought..

I can't think of any farmers off hand, but I know there are farms on the surrounding area, within a coupls hours drive. He eats the Lamb formula now, so I know he is good with that protein. Thanks for the idea!

For all of you that want to feed raw here is a thought: contact your local hunter(s); they have clubs and groups that hunt all year. You would be able to get fresh deer, antelope, bison, and I am sure lots of other meats. Most probably have already been cut up and packaged, they always have left overs and excess y ou could take off their hands; even if it has been frozen for some time it is OK to feed our dogs. Just a thought Best of luck to all, Nan
