Felloffher, I've seen it! Gemini/blackthorn, the op started another thread to find the American shepherd, but you are right. Sure, some can do it, but if we are talking about PP, obviously you feel that something in your life is threatened, right? Or else, why not just do sport? I wouldn't buy a .25 for home protection. A nice modified 12 guage will do the trick! My point is that if you are truly in need of protection, get what will actually excel and be more apt to give it's life for you. I'm sure I could get a Dobermann to bird hunt, but if this was my family's means to eat, I'd go get a bird dog. Otherwise, we might be eating a fat dobe with a taste for bird.

Don,

I don't feel threatend we live in a remote area, the chances of having anything happen are slim to none. Our PPD was originaly purchased as guard dog for my shop, we liked him as a companion so he didn't  end up spending much time there after hours. I do travel and my wife is home alone at times, so it's nice that he's here looking out for her. The Min Pin does bite on tugs and sweaters on command, but really a fart would send him packing.

Doing PPD training for me is far more interesting than sport.

And that's your choice. I like sport because it is more of a test for a handler. I started in PP.

Rik, you must have been hitting the bottle early last night.  what do I do?
I sit at home with a right foot that has ruptured tendons in it, a c-spine injury, both awaiting surgery, and will probaly never be better, thats what I do.  why do people have to be soo threatened when someone mentions an american dog that does something well?  I have seen many american showlines in the herding ring being titled, when many german lines didn't have what it took, they were too dangerous around the livestock.

as with any comment, not all are good at it, but some.  not all german dogs can perform the original function the breed was intended for because they have been bred for sport, but some do.
and not all american showlines can perform well in schutzhund or PPD. but some do.  why would anyone who owned an american dog want to train with the likes of some of you people? you immediately look at a pedigree and determine if the dog can work or not.

why not judge the individual  dog on its own merits.

I will have to agree with twomoons on a different thread, maybe its time to leave this forum for a while, not due to the moderation, but due to the nastiness of some of the members.

Don't leave! Do what I do. I wait until after I've drank a good amount of booze. That way I don't remember what I've said and in the morning, my feelings aren't hurt from these mean old internet bullies.

the only reason I mentioned the CTH bitch being the first DOG to earn the ASCA herding title on cattle wa because has anyone here actually had a dog work cattle?  have they seen a dog bring in cattle who have been out to pasture for a season or longer?

though off topic, the below pictures are just a few I have of 2 heifers taking down a BLACK BEAR.  if they can do this to a black bear, imagine what they could do to a 60 lb american showline bitch, let alone a CTH bitch (just saying this since most of you say they aren't worth feeding).   this dog performed a real JOB, not just some sport, or weekend pasttime. very few members on this forum have dogs who perform REAL JOBS.  most are sport dogs.  so when you talk about work or real work next time, remember these pictures, and remember that there was a little CTH showline bitch doing this work daily, and many other american showlines living on ranches bringing in livestock daily.

Thanks Uber Land -- that is very interesting.   Yes, there is definitely a distinction between  "sport" dogs and "working" dogs -- as you said, dogs that do Real Jobs.

Can american line be trained for protection?

I saw a bear ride a unicycle and a chimp drive a car.
