I don't see how ANY dog lover can be biased against a particular breed. Not wanting to own certain breeds is one thing, but to bash them and spread falsehoods is another.

I have right now, several GSDs, all working lines, one Pit Bull (used to foster them, have owned several but am down to one now), a Chihuahua, and a Pekingese. Pits were my first love, and the first breed I really got obsessed with. I love some of the old time books and stories. Didn't get into GSDs until about 8 years ago.

Any dog enthusiast needs to be aware of the repercussions of breed bashing. It's contagious! Your breed could be next!

The cropped ears, are just one of many media hyped Old Wives Tales.  I don't know of any dogman who would crop his dog's ears ( for a reason).  This Crop and that Crop, are all media terms, used and practiced by those who regard the media as their mentors.  I imagine there may be a dogman or two who may like the cropped ear, but they would be in the very great minority.

Below are just some of the most famous and well known APBT's of the last 40yrs. You can see they did not have cropped ears.

Abhay, what old wives' tale do you mean?

I like natural ears if they're nice. He's the only one I've ever had w/cropped ears. His ears were awful and he was always ripping them up at the bottom. My female had nice ears- decent leather. His just sucked.

99% of dogs around here have all but a tiny bit of their ears totally chopped off; it looks silly- more like a molosser- type crop you see on some.

And yes...there were a few who liked a cropped ear. I remember reading the "how to" (do it yourself w/a board) in an old book or two.

by Abhay on 06 March 2010 - 02:03

I'm talking about the so called "Combat Crop", where the ears are chopped off as short as possible.  Then when some lost idiot, or media type looks at said dog, it is catagorized as a "Fighting Dog", when in truth, a Pit Bull who was used in the Pit would probably not have cropped ears.  Not always, but the vast majority.

What's the first thing a Punk wants to do with their Pit Puppy?   Chop off his ears of course.

Jenni- I love that pic of Simon and Caleb.Simon is cut like a bodybuilder.lol Kinda looks like that are dancing in the pic.Although I am sure that someone is going to be stupid and say that they are fighting....cause you know I can just see you being a ring leader of a dog fighting club.lol (said with sarcasm)
I ask know what you mean about the ears. I have seen some that have such fine ears that if they shake their head...the ear ends up bleeding at the end.Better to crop those for sure.

Hey Jenn, just a question about the APBt coat.... my Gizmo could not handle the cold like a true GSD.  It wouldn't be long before he'd be picking up his front feet, wanting inside. My GSD however, thinks snow is like sand at the beach. What can you say about this?

Ah, ok Abhay. I know what you mean now. I do find that humorous b/c most dogs w/cropped ears are SHOW DOGS- ie, AmStaffs. Or, they have the no-ear look like their moronic owner did it themselves w/some scissors...which they probably did. I got asked at a Starbucks drive thru if he was a rescue. I said "no, why?" She responded because he looks like a fighting dog. HUH? He doesn't have a mark on him. I guess b/c a lot of the dogs they see getting seized on the news have cropped ears they thought it had something to do w/fighting. His ears don't look anything like those dogs' ears!

Lav- dog fight- my house, tomorrow night. Bring your own beer. Remember the secret knock. Oh, and admission has been raised to pay my fines from last time. Damn neighbors need to mind their own business!

BUT- that is QIRA! Not Caleb! He and Caleb can't be anywhere near each other. He and Qira are best buds and have been since puppyhood. He and Caleb would be a hideous fight I'd never want to see. They were fine until Simon was too old for Caleb to correct like a puppy, then I separated them.
