Vikram,
all the drives an d threshold stuff ,i think no one explians it better than Helmut Riser.Have you read his book.if you want to learn all that stuff read him and that is all you would need.people get caught up in all kind of crap.there are all kind of dogs you can find in this world all you need is to look and know what you are looking for.
people always going on about shutzhund dogs that how they are only working in prey and have no real agression when most of the time it is how that dog was trained.
A dog has to have the right drives to be a good protection dog and the then the proper training and right training would turn this dog in to great protection dog.People also talk about dog having too much prey drive and i can tell you as wise man once said "there is no such thing as dog having too much prey drive what is wrong is if that is the only drive a dog has.
this is true because if you listen to Helmut Riser he says most dogs he has worked with great fight drive were also dogs that had a great deal of prey drive.i tend to belive him after all he has worked a lot of dogs in his life and best of the best seem to look up to him. My hole thing is the way you describe the social agreesive dog in your original post.that is wrong. have a nice one.

So what was the question?
It is all about definitions. True protection drive as far as I am concerned is Defensive drive. This is a defensive drive in my book: NEGATIVE THREAT --> triggeres FEAR / SUSPICION-----> is overcomed by COURAGE -----> through AGGRESSION.
Now there are many different qualities to these traits. This is being diminshet in modern sport dogs because it is not necessary for performance in sport. I am starting new bloodline specifically designed to bring these traits out. That is for POLICE and SECURITY dogs.
BUT:
GENETICS;
Fred Lanting explained it to me once for hips. And it is true for any trait. Genes are always there like different cards in the deck of cards. It is important to stack the deck through selective breeding in a way that the desirable cards/genes are on the top of the deck an dundesirable one on the bottom of such deck. Now you need two such decks of genes. Sire and Dam. If you have the both decks stacked with certain corresponding genes on the top of the deck then there is higher probability that you will get it in progeny. Thus NOTHING IS WEEDED OUT > You can not weed out nothing. All the genes, all the way from primordial ooze are there. You just need to get it to the "top of the deck".
That is then accomplished because culture of certain societies need and desire such trait. I believe that the different breeds and qualities within the breeds are result of the original purpose of such breed and subsequently of cultural changes in such societies. But the genes are there like cards in the deck . Just bring them to the top of the deck if you need/want them. Thus nothing is lost.
For the sake of the breed.
