I've dabbled in a lot of different things. Put Sch3, IPO3 TR1 on my first boy (not an overly bad sch 3 score, he got 274, and never lower then 90's in protection), then a BH on another dog I sold before putting a 1 on, and then 2 more BH's on two young dogs I am now working on 1's with hopefully in December, but sometime soon hopefully. Have been actively involved in sch for approximately 7 years, longer then some, shorter then others:-) I've dabbled a bit here and there (not necessarily with the shepherds) in agility, herding, and conformation. My problem is I really don't care for competition. I'm not overly nuts about the adrenaline burst when you step in front of the crowd. I do it because it's kind of a culmination of the training, but it's not my favorite part. My boys do have CGC's on them, and my one boy will get hopefully his sch 1, perhaps a CD, already has a CGC, and will turn and focus on SDA titles. I don't care for his obedience and don't want to go to war over the dumbells or tracking with him, so will do what schutzhund we can without having a battle, and then turn towards what he will be better at. Nothing that stresses me more then not having the obedience I want. Protection is good, has always been good in the dogs I've worked with. I just can't feel the level of patience I need when a dogs obedience isn't where I want it. I have another dog that was a therapy dog (he's very old now and retired) I'm also a pro trainer (grew up training dogs and make my living off it), have trained other peoples dogs for stuff as well including hunting dogs, AKC obedience, etc. I have been a studio animal trainer (did it for a couple of years before I decided it really isn't for me, the erratic schedule is enough to drive anyone insane!) and I have a couple of dogs that do occasional jobs still. Also have worked with exotic animals including birds of prey and wolves, though it's been awhile. Honestly for me it's all about the fun training anything. Doesn't have to be a dog even, I've trained everything from rats, to cats, to parrots, a raven, raccoons, pigs, goats, etc etc. Training is training:-) I currently have an african grey parrot who, if I can tame up a little better will be an ultimate for me. Great talker and learning all kinds of cool tricks pretty quickly. He's a smart boy. Not that yall needed to know my background in other animals, but my interest isn't just in schutzhund, and not even totally in dogs. It's in training in general, and I've been at that for 20 + years. I'm not posting a resume here or anything, don't feel the need to. But if anyone else loves training everything the way I do, happy to chat:-) Ilovemygsdnenz I've trained PSD's before. Glad they help the way they do.

.......My problem is I really don't care for competition.

I'll second that!!!!  I really enjoy the training for Schutzhund, but become a basket of nerves when it comes to trialing.  :)  Trying to work on that a bit though....Have less than two weeks for the next time too.  Sigh....

Rezcat-

Come on up before your next trial. I have a pretty good set of remedies, preparation exercises and ritual behaviors specifically designed over the last 20 years for addressing trial-nerves, myself never sure if I'll actually throw up between every phase in a major event, even now, or not! I'm always happy to share with a fellow nerve-bag. LOL

I think you can split this up into 3 different sections.

1.  What did the breeder do with their dogs to warrant breedworthiness (Buyer should care)

2.  What did I plan to do with a puppy I bought from said breeder (Breeder should care)

3.  What do I do or what have I accomplished with said puppy (I should care)

Val,

GDT - Guard Dog Temperament.
DHT - Defense of Handler Temperament.
IDT3 - Irondog Triathlon completion.

All are offerd through Irondog.  It is mainly a bully breed thing but all breeds are welcome. The tests are fairly simple and most GSDs would pass them with ease. Its just one more fun thing you can do with your dog.

I do most AKC stuff because there simply isn't anything else in my area (over 200 mile to the nearest Schuthund Club).  I really like all the dog sports.  My white gsd rescue just retired this year after doing 8 years as a therapy dog.  When I saw he wasn't enjoying it anymore, we stopped going.  He still has the skills just not the desire.  He has his AKC Rally Novice Title and his CGC.  We have tried traditional obedience with him but his therapy dog training kicks in an he simple has to go visit the judge at some point every time we're in the ring.  My female is my show dog and she's been primarily a learning dog for me.  She does have her Rally Novice Title as well and here CGC but she really doesn't enjoy the show ring or competition.  She will try anything I ask of her (easier than my boy) but I tell she doesn't enjoy it.  We have played at agility with her (she likes the dog walk, A-Frame and Tunnels) but nothing competitive.  She does ok in the show ring but as you all know GSD's in AKC conformation are very competitive and my area is almost all pro-fessional handlers.  Actually in the 4 years I've been showing (we don't do a lot of shows each year), there's only been one show where I wasn't the only non-pro.  So my guys don't compete a lot but they do enjoy training.

I really want to add another GSD to our household (male, German Showline) but I have to convince my dh first.  My next dog will also be trained for obedience and the show ring.  I'd, also, like to try tracking and agiltiy with him.  But competition will depend on the dog's enjoyment of it.  I would love to give Schutzhund a try but I would never tackle it strictly on my own.  Too easy to mess up, big time!

Thanks for your offer Shelly.  Been try to change my way of thinking before trialing, but it's a slow process!

I have not been to a dog event of any kind in a while, and I wanted to go to an upcoming
show in Dec. I have a beautiful yellow male labrador retriever named Harold (Harold big head)
is his nickname, he is 4 years old & my daughter has trained him since he was a pup, in
obedience, and I wanted to take Harold & my shepherd Theo by myself to the show, cause I
didn't think my 18 year old wanted to go to the show, and then, out of the blue, she says,
I want to take Harold to a show, I was so happy, I love to go to that show every year, and I hate
to go empty handed, Harold should do pretty good in conformation, but Theo probably won't,
(not skinny or extremely sloped butt!)  They are also going to do rally, but the real reason for
going is to hang out with the kid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That will be my prize!!!

Living in Harmony!!!       I am soooooooooo  Happy!!!!!
