Well, since this post has been dragged to the surface, I'll add that I just had a jerland pup for training out of his Rikkor son and she was a completely exceptional puppy, completely correct, totally confident, great drive. I loved her. I've seen dogs from him over the years and she was hands down my favorite.

No personal experience, but the name rang a bell so I googled them... They used to show quite a bit back in the 80's AKC American bred dogs, even had a ROM bitch. Haven't seen their name in the show reports lately, so could be that they've dropped out of showing. I did notice that they've got a LOT of males on their site, and probably 20+ dogs advertised as theirs. It could be that like many they've gotten into too many dogs, and the purchased dog in question was "kennel shy" which as others have pointed out would be a doubtful choice for a therapy dog, and which you said they did tell you. Though price was an issue I understand also being on a limited income (disability) you're not going to easily make a therapy dog from a sow's ear so to speak. Better to choose a sound dog from a rescue than a socially neglected "bargin".
Jerland was ONCE a well known Kennel in the show world... but a dog that they "didn't have time to socialize" at a cut rate price should have raised some red flags. May sound hard... but a bargain is only a bargin if it's really what you want. "I got a terrified of everything 8 month black female GSD for $5oo at Jerland and had to give her away because she was way too shy." Sorry you got stuck.. sorrier for the poor dog who though afraid was probably relieved to be in a home rather than a cage... though she might never have been the therapy dog you'd hoped for it's too bad she bounced yet again. Time work and careful socialization might have turned her around to be a wonderful pet like Duke. He also got rejected because he wasn't what people had hoped.
Hey... and you guys who said you could LIVE on 600-700 a month... try it! Rents alone are more than that in my area (though you said after rent... sorry less you have a tree house you have to count it ), forget about things like Heat, electricity of heaven forbid FOOD! Vet costs are insane! I worked as a Vet Tech for 25 years, and know that the vaccine for annual shots costs maybe $7-10 even with a syringe tossed in yet giving annual shots and HWT to one dog the estimate locally was $150... It's a bug of mine... like human health care... Basic care, REQUIRED CARE should be just a bit above cost... *sigh* but that 's another thread I guess.

We bought our German Shepherd from Larry Jerome at Jerland Kennels and found it to be nothing but the best experience for us and our 4 children in 2-05. We all went and met with Larry. We were welcomed into his home and were shown about his property, we were shown several puppies of various ages and different personalities before chosing, and he was very professional and friendly. I grew up with German Shepherds, my family members have German Shepherds and we had just lost our beloved German Shepherd of 12 yrs to age. So we sought out Jerland Kennels to get our next puppy and we couldn't be happier. She is so beautiful and healthy. Temperant is perfect! She is the most loyal, loving companion anyone could ask for. She is good with children and other pets, mild mannered and our families "Best Friend". Everywhere we go people comment on what a beautiful dog she is and on her coloring and features. Her OFA x-ray's showed her elbows were "good" but her hips were an "excellent" which is not so common I guess. We have called Larry in the past for advice and he's been helpful. We took a drive back to his home the spring of 2007 to inquire about breeding our Jada with his stud and he was again, friendly and professional, down to earth, upfront with his opinions, razed our kids a bit, shook hands with us, and overall very pleasant. Our kids and us again were able to walk around his property and see some puppies, hold them, etc... Just want you all to know the wonderful experience we have had with Larry and Jerland Kennels over the past 3 1/2 years. I would recommend Jerland Kennels to anyone.

sigh. certainly surprised to see this thread pop up again. i want to make a few things clear. the jerland dog was not by any means my first pup. to be fair, yes he said he supposed he would let me trade her back. i chose not to. my fault. if i traded her back, she would have sat in a cage again for god knows how long. (she was in there her whole life til i bought her at age 8 months. it cost me $500 to not return her but i thought she deserved a loving home and not a cage, plus i just didn't want to deal with larry at all anymore.) i don't hold anything against him at this time. he has alot of dogs and i find even 2 dogs to be very time-consuming. the jerland dog was very skittish, even more terrified of people than i was, and her anxiety only worsened mine. i am doing much better now thanx to therapy and my current dogs are now just dogs. i used to think i needed a service (not therapy) dog but now i am fine without one. i walk them around every night but during the day they stay home as pets. my poodle was a mess when i got her, shy, skittish, fearful, and wary. i extensively socialized her and a few months later she became the friendly sociable loveable creature she is today. justcurious, i fail to see how buying my poodle was an impulsive fulfilling of my personal desire..........fluffy is my little girl's dog. my significant other grew up with a poodle and i gave my daughter a choice between another german shepherd, a poodle, or a golden retriever. she chose poodle. my daughter said she didn't want another german shepherd because nenz barked at her when she came home from school and spunky knocked her down. my little girl and significant other love our sweet, beautiful, well-mannered poodle girl. she has really grown on me as well. by the way if anyone wants to know my girl spunky aka zippy vom haus miller is one of the best dogs i have ever had, the only dog i have ever had that does not pee all over when scared or nervous. she has rock-solid nerves, great temperament, and pulls great in harness with the bike.

as for my income which has been discussed at length, yes i am on disability but my significant other works and our combined income is about $2,500 a month, still poverty level but not as bad as most of my friends.
i was also criticized about nenz getting attacked by the neighbor. i did not know she was hitting him until after we moved and i heard her say it. now i NEVER leave a dog outside unsupervised. people comment on how friendly my dogs are and i say that is because nobody has ever hurt them, and nobody ever will.
so, repeat, i hold no grudge against jerland at this time. i was disappointed because i wanted a young puppy and that was not what i could afford.
when i told vhmillers i didn't think i could afford one of their puppies, i was told they would be willing to work with me, which they did. spunky is my most valuable possession and worth every penny i paid for her. i will be going to vhmillers for my next pup.
that is all i have to say.

He runs an overpriced puppy mill IMO. Produces 40 litters a year. Has a lousy rep up here in Minnesota. Known to send dogs to Europe to get titled and come back a few weeks later with a sch3. Yeah. Right. Glad people are happy with their dogs from Jerland. I'd rather see him get out of business. He, IMO, also doesn't place he pups well---in inappropriate fitting homes for an active dog. We had several GSD from Jerland in our Aggressive Dog class. People around here may get their first dog with Jerland, but rarely the second once they know what its about.

Indeed Rama...many of his puppies come through my kennel club, and often they are weaknerved and unpleasant by 6 months.
When I called my breeder to let her know Strauss's ears had never come up fully as she said they would, she offered me a new puppy at half price. I asked who the parents were (though I knew enough about her at this time to know I would NOT accept another puppy from her). The moment she said a Jerland bitch was to be the dam, I politely told her no thank you, and that I would continue to enjoy my semi flop eared boy.

I have not bought a GSD directly from Jerland, but in the past 20 years have had 4 males from the Jerland line. They have been the sweetest, best behaved dogs I have ever owned. Plus the staff at my Minnesota vet's office raves about them!

this post is one of the problems I have with these so called reputable breeders. For all those who have pleasant experiences with breeders you must acknowlege that there are probably an equal amount of unpleasant experiences . What I dispise about these breeders who say satisfaction guaranteed is this. These breeders bank on the human emotions of new dog owners to not give up the puppy they have lived with for several months in exchange for another dog of equal or lesser value. Then these breeders claim to not be puppy mills! A breeder should be the first one to know if the animal will be suitable for what it was bred for! The Germans sure nugh know which dogs not to sell. Yet we as greedy americans will sell anything and give an unconditional quarantee and refuse to honor it as honorable people. And for the puppy who's ears did not come up to be offered another dog at half price is scandelous to say the least. i hate liars and evenmore I hate breeders who lie and are not interested in the dogs or dog owners welfare before the financial gain of their own selfesh interests. I grew up with rin tin tin and he always caught the bad guys. Now the bad guys are breeding rin tin tin It is the breeders responsibility to socialize all the dogs they breed for sale up unto the time the dog leaves their care. And no price amount can excuse the breeder from their responsibility.

I have never owned one of his GSDs. 3 years ago when I was looking for one. I called him and asked him for the price before I drove from the Twin cities with my two kids. He told me 750.00 on the phone. When I got over to his house and looked at the litter he switched the price to 2,500.00 . He tried to set up a payment program with me but I thought this was to much.
I then found another GSD breeder in MN and bought one for around 750.00 I have had her for two and a half years and is great with all the kids around. The hips came up good for her OFA. She is from American lines and is smart and beautiful.
He sells so many dogs non stop its incredible. Its like a factory setup. Big money maker no doubt.
I am not sure on how many people can pick up on that when you speak with him. I think he takes advantage of some people.
People must sense what is going on with his set up. He is like a high pressure car sales man. I cant believe people are not smart enough to see through it all.
He shows on his web sight an American GV female from 1992 for the breeding females. He only talked of the German lines with me. I dont like the Roach back, Banna back. Look at the GSDs from Germany 1899-1970s years back they did not look like a camel. Think about it the top line is not correct.
This is my opinion take it or leave it.
