Take a good long hard look at us as a people carlin.
Killing is a way of life.
Those who as you say cannot speak for themselves (cute slogan) are the bodies of women who you have no say over.

Substantiate that.

GSD - Because another life is involved, it's not just a matter of her body, but also of the baby's life. The taking of that life is what some of us have a problem with.

by GSD Admin on 21 May 2013 - 14:05
The baby is in her body. You don't have a right to tell her what to do. No matter what you think. You simply don't have the right to tell her what she can or can't do.

Moons - a "potential life", would need only a "potential abortion" to end that life. I've had the "privilege" of seeing my wife hold my miscarried daughter in her hand, in the second trimester. Though she was dependent on my wife's body, she had her own.

How about some interesting statistics from CDC, American Academy of Pediatrics, NIH:
There is evidence that adolescent pregnancy when brought to term is associated with certain risks to both the mother and infant, although the risks are mostly related to social factors associated with adolescent childbearing and not to young age per se. [2-6] However, the greatest age-related effect of adolescent pregnancy is the high frequency of low birth weight infants and the resulting physical and developmental problems that occur in these infants. [7-11] In one study the children born to mothers younger than 18 years developed more slowly than those born to a group of mothers older than 18 who were otherwise matched on a series of social and economic characteristics. [12] Children of teenagers have been shown to be shorter, weigh less, have lower IQs, and be more distractible than those born to older mothers. [12,13] Young children of teenage mothers have been shown to have higher fatal injury rates [14] and a higher rate of hospital admissions for injuries and gastroenteritis, although not for other illnesses examined. [15,16]. It has been shown that abortion is safer than childbirth, particularly for adolescents younger than the age of 15. [18-20] Adolescents have similar or lower rates of complications following legal abortions than do older women, although reasons for this finding are not clear. [21] The evidence concerning mental health effects of abortion is generally negative or inconclusive. [22,23]. Over half of all women getting abortions report that contraception was used during the month they became pregnant.1 No contraceptive method prevents pregnancy 100% of the time.
Average of 207.754 victims age 12 or older of rape and sexual assault each year. 1 sexual assault every 2 minutes. 1 out of every 6 women has been the victim of an attempted or completed reap in her lifetime and 1 out of every 2 women will face unwanted sexual advances in her lifetime (some studies claim almost every woman alive today has faced unwanted sexual advances). 15% of sexual assault and rape victims are under age 12. 29% are age 12-17, 44% are under age 18. 12-34 years old are the highest risk years. Girls ages 16-19 are 4x more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault. Children born to underage mothers have a statistically significantly higher chance of developing cognitive, neurological, and physical health problems in early life. Many women are forced to obtain abortions by their sexual partner, many victims of incest are forced to have abortions to "get rid" of the evidence.
According to statistics gathered and analyzed by CDC, 784,507 legal induced abortions were reported to CDC from 48 reporting areas. The abortion rate was 15.1 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44 years. Women in their 20s accounted for the majority of abortions. 91.7% of abortions took place before 13 weeks of gestation, and of this number 69.8% were before 8 weeks of gestation. Teen mothers are more likely to be unmarried and of low income status and mothers who do not receive prenatal care are more likely to be of a low-income status and uninsured. Infant mortality is highest among underinsured, uninsured mothers with low-income status. Over 65% of all infant deaths occurred during the neonatal period (birth through age 27 days). Infant mortality rates based on gender of infant were 21% higher infant mortality for male infants than female infants. Infant mortally was highest in mothers under age 15 years old. Infant mortality is similar in ages 15-18 and over 39 years of age and is the second highest number of infant deaths. Infant mortality rates for the five leading causes of infant death are listed as: congenital malformations deformations, and chromosomal abnormalities most often occurring in mothers below age 18 and over age 39 and accounting for 20% of infant deaths. Disorders relating to short gestation and low birth weight are second accounting for 17% of infant deaths and occurs in mothers aged 17 and under as well as 40 and older. SID accounts for 8% of infant deaths, the fourth and fifth leading causes are newborns affected by maternal complications of pregnancy, accidents, and unintentional injuries.
Late term abortions are a rarity and what what done by Grosnell was horrific. Yes most women should have decided early on whether to abort or carry to term. It is sad that pregnant women are still having to choose between carrying to term and abortion. But lets look at some other facts on what can happen to pregnant women who are working. From EEOC and court cases.
Women who are pregnant have the highest number of job losses. Despite the 2008 Pregnancy Discrimination Act, many pregnant women are forced out of jobs or placed in jobs that are part time or at lower wages. Many new mothers are not given their job or a similar wage and duties job upon return. A Brooklyn judge stated that an employer did not need to accommodate a pregnant woman's needs despite the pregnant woman's attorney producing the 2008 PDA law. Women now make up half the workforce and women are primary or co-bread winners in over two thirds of families. In the last year alone, a 35% rise in charges of pregnancy discrimination. Research has found that women are judged more harshly or negatively than men pregnant women are judged the most harshly and negatively. Despite decades of jurisprudence interpreting Title VII and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, including precedents established by the Supreme Court, recent cases filed by EEOC demonstrate that pregnant women continue to face discrimination arising form stereotypical attitudes about their work ethic, productivity, or commitment. Employers to this day make inappropriate inquiries regarding marital status and whether they have children or plan to get pregnant. In some cases, employers revoke job offers after learning of pregnancies.
- pregnant mother refused same necessary accommodations despite employer offering necessary accommodations to disable employees.
- pregnant mother terminated for one bad job performance revaluation despite outstanding evaluations for past 4 years.
- pregnant mother was terminated when it was discovered that she was pregnant during routine urine drug test, reason cited, "withholding vital information".
- pregnant mother forced to train her "replacement".
- returning new mother informed her job had been delegated to part time status without benefits.
- new mother informed her job had been outsourced and she had till end of week.
EEOC has collected more than $160 million dollars in monetary settlements on behalf of all pregnancy discrimination victims. The number of charges field by pregnant women detailing workplace discrimination rose by 56% since 2009, which is alarming in light of the general birthrate declining significantly.
If you want the rate of abortions to decline then instead of severely restricting access to abortions, prenatal care, contraception, financial assistance, and other programs needed by young children and mothers, increase access to all of these. Make it a priority to help these mothers and children after the birth for those of you so interested in maintaining the pregnancy. Make sex education realistic instead of abstinence only, make reliable day cares easily accessible so the mothers can work, make financial assistance available until the mother is able to find employment, stop the stereotypic view of women, pregnant women, and mothers that is so detrimental to women (and women are sometimes their own worst enemies in thinking poorly of other women and allowing the stereotype to prevail). Make sexual assault prevention a priority and educate children on this (how many of you saw the demonizing of the girls that were victims of sexual assault because they became drunk or were drugged and other took videos of the assualts?). Stop blaming the women alone for their assaults, pregnancies, and decisions to terminate their pregnancies. Believe me if all women refused to give men sex in any way, shape, or form until things started changing, how long do you think it would take??? (It has worked in Liberia, Kenya, Togo, and other places lol)

carlin,
your religious beliefs form your opinion about life.
You want me to tell you and your wife what to do next time she becomes pregnant?

GSD - Murder is either legal, or it's not. It would be illegal for me to kill my kids, though the youngest is as dependent for life on us he was before he was born. He can't shelter himself, feed himself, protect himself, etc.

Now it is murder once more around the block.

Moons - "life" is an observable fact, not a belief. My wife an I live in a society with certain rules. Some of them, protect my children from me. Although I think we take this too far, those parents who would harm, or allow their kids to be harmed, make this a necessary evil.
