Not my Abby girl, again!  How is she today?  I love that dog, YR is right, one of the best!  Hope she's okay, pretty soon you'll be able to use her blood for anti-venom!  Give her a hug from me

Eastern Montana Rattler with head cut off...

Steph cleaning rattlesnake, wasn't enough meat to eat, heard the southern ones have more meat on them, I had to try it once though...
I do like snakes, have had many as pets, save all the garter snakes and put them in my yard to eat bugs and such, but sorry no poisonous ones allowed....

Thanks  Steph:

Abby is better this morning., but her foot is stiff and swollen. Gave her another dose of Benedryl.

I have one problem in planning a move...where to?

Too many gsd to move in town and there are copperheads all over East Texas. My son cleared the property last June and July ,  & August.  It doesn't  help because there are deep woods on all sides but one and that person has gress as high as his back porch.

No matter what you do , they come to the clearing because I have loads of little frogs, crickets, cacadas , spiders, etc and no dog food laying around. I am putting moth balls under my home and sulfur out..I have two wood piles but so does every one else . I have to have in case of emergency use, as our Electric Co op has outages out of the gazoobu.

Just as I have a hand well, I have to have ways to cook or keep warm so wood is necessary . I will put lots of moth balls, sulfur and DE around all these places, but the snakes  still come on my property as it is well mowed and has a creek on it. Most people do not even go out doors after 11 pm at night so I am  the exception..I play with dogs , and clean and feed at 1 - 2-pm/ every night. I have tried doing it earlier in day and it is way too hot..I clean every morning and do not enjoy it.

I enjoy the night sounds and the peace and coolness of the late evening night..It is Gods peace and meekness. Just the way I like it.  BUT I guess the serpents like it tooooooooo.    THey may win.

ABBY  sats Love ya  GSDtravels and Drake!    Abby is in HEAT , also. Just noticed that last night, too. She also has lost all her under coat and is minus all her thick coat.

Poor baby, give her some Midol along with the benadryl.  She is really such a beautiful girl and pics just don't do her justice.  She's got the sweetest eyes I've ever seen.  She hops fences like they aren't even there, she scared the heck out of me the first day on the place.  YR told me to be careful going out, depending on which dogs were loose.  So, I went out to my car and saw a dog inside the white fence and thought nothing of it.  Got what I needed and when I turned around, there she was!  I didn't know immediately who it was so I stayed still.  Then I saw those eyes... she just came over to say "Hi" and see what I was doing, LOL.  I loved her from that moment on!

As far as the males, I'd have to say it was a tie between Laredo and Rex.  Laredo didn't like me at first, but he warmed up pretty quick and we were buddies in no time.  Rex was just a lover, period!

Interesting thread with interesting different points of view.  I know this is somewhat off topic but some have mentioned how some species are becoming increasingly more rare and someone on the first page mentioned the Massauga.  An intersting tidbit on that line of thought... My Aunt is supposed to be training a dog to detect the Massauga.  The facility she trains for was contacted by I believe the Chicago Zoological Society ( I could be wrong on the agency making the request) who made the request for a trained detection do that can go into the wild and find this snake.   Apperantly it is nearing extinction and they very much want to capture them to study and hopefully breed to help the population.  Her boss has talked to her about being the one to spearhead the training.  A very interesting project don't you think (whether you like snakes or not).  As Aristotle said, "In all things of nature there is something of the marvelous".  With that in mind we should make every attempt to learn all that we can from all things in nature, even those that aren't pretty, especially those which may not share this earth with us much longer.
Sorry for going off topic.

Eep poor abby

Give her some extra lovin from us all...

On another note please please please don't give a dog midol... It's main ingredient is naproxen which is an NSAID..(like Ibuprofen/motrin)   NSAIDS can do horrible things to the dog tummies.

( not being snide to GSDtravels as I know it was only an in heat joke, Just didnt want anyone to take it seriously :P )

Rose,
It wont help the dogs but since my snake encounter I use a walking stick at night to thrash around in my path.

Might keep you from being bitten.

Not sure when they breed but that may be why there are so many in one place.

Be very careful with moth balls.

Moons.

sorry, YR, don't use traps, just walk up and pick them right up .  its easy in cool weather,  as warm as its been lately, We'd have a snake hook with us and some pillow cases and 5g buckets, lol.

but I've been known to pick up venomous snakes for a while,  worried my mother sick when I was growing up, I had no fear.  still not afraid of them, but have a ton of respect for them.

not sure if you've seen but they have some training course going on in Dallas about snake avoidance training soon.

Sangreinu, yes it was said in jest, didn't think about those that would actually do it!  LOL.
