Do remember that on a Forum when anyone should ask advice or opinions, they may not always hear what they would like and prefer, or expect and want. Sometimes unfortunately the written word does not necessarily come across the way it is intended either. However, responses and replies will be other people's experience, opinions and ideas. Providing they are sent with good intent and respect, digest and consider the replies in relation to you and your situation personally.
We only have the information that a Poster provides and nothing more. I personally have the interests of the dog and a desire to promote a good rapport between Owner and dog, so both enjoy the relationship as they need and should.
PS. Did not realise until now that your dog is called Captain - that's different and smart.
Regards,

Have a great one....sorry , all of this is easy with the second gsd ...I had a very good mentor with my first one but I found it confusing and very hard....now it is a piece of cake 23 yrs later....lol The joy comes in a year from now when you look back and see what you learned and what the dog learned and how well they obey and work and are so dedicated to you...just keep him focused with movement and food...and bond and praise...all the rest comes as you see him wanting to please you...your girlfriend can learn from you later....she can bond and socialize but if she doesnt do the things the same as you do you will confuse the pup...so you need to get pup very much bonding and working for you first...just kiss the girlfriend and let her love her and feed her but you need to be alpha....

While bonding with him on floor do not feed all day call him to you squat down to his level...take a tiny piece of meat,,hold in front of his face...lure him close to you take meat hold to your nose...move it to his nose do not let him bite it,,hide it inside hand quickly..if he tries command sitz when he sitz give it to him make him stay .....immediately show him another piece have a belly bag or bag open and handy ...immed show another piece make him look at it and move up to YOUR NOSE>. keep him looking at you for as long as you can..when you see him about to break the sitz give it to him before he gets up ...if he gets up do not give it to him......just repeat the same until you co ordinate your response to beating him to the move.....keep doing this longer and longer and longer and longer and longer....until you achieve him staring at the meat in your hand until you give it to him without him moving..you can make a deroggatory noise when he starts to get up after ,you have shown him he only gets it with sitz....repeat sitz until he does ......but make the sessions longer and longer...do not train over 10 mins at a time....leave and go to play time outside...so not to bore and let him get distracted..Pups have short term focus ability ...that will increase each month of his training..it is up to you to do this for weeks till he learns to watch you can then tell him Capt watch show it to his nose back to yours...then try his favorite toy ball or whatever he is crazy about....not your shoe or your legs!!!!!!!! lol
Focus is keeping his eyes on your eyes and your face learning to look up to you sitting ,standing or heeling or platzing...a very valuable must teach
the pups I breed do not need to be taught focus....so I am having to guess this pup just is not use to being LED into the focus..who knows...mine are so focused I sometimes wonder if they see anything but my hand and the ball or anything else but what I have in hand or me.....That is how I imprint from 5 , 6 , 7 weeks old...My pups leave her focused on your hands and with that undescribable ability to look up and please you ...even with the exteme drives you have to show a pup how to learn to stay focused.... the stay focused is what I do...but some pups have to learn focus if not of high food, and ball or play drive. they seem to think your legs, pants and feet are their focus ....but you change that into the face and eye and hand focus with a ball., food or toy...or tool..

No I meant just what I wrote .. when you train you do not feed your day all day long...! He is bonding with his pup..eat out of his hand...he is not gonna do this every day of the week anyway , I doubt, even if he did for several weeks ,,,not gonna hurt a pup eating just what he gets out of the hand or off the ground...When we train tracking,,many of my trainer friends,,never feed a dog anything on that day of tracking but what they eat off the ground.....are they gonna die or be mistreated..This is working dog training...I don't know anything about pets or other kinds of training....This pup is by my evaluation one who need to not fed until he finds out his MAN is his ALPHA ..IF he misses a few meal...maybe he will pay attention and FOCUS on the one who he holds dear.....
When you train for FOCUS DO NOT FEED DOG ALL DAY LONG !
We are not training a pet...this is for FOCUS>.....USE FOOD DRIVE....that is the only drive the pup has right now....can't use prey or agression drive can YOU? NO
]
HUNGRY DOG OR PUP responds to the food....He isn't gonna die or drop over in malnutrition.....HOW do you train FOCUS?
