The buyer has never paid for the last pup they bought . Yet they want a deal on a new one . Yup that works for some . Not me . The buyer complains over a dog that was gifted to them over 6 years ago then still thinks they are owed something on a gift .The buyer breaks all the terms of the last contract and still thinks they are owed something . The buyer is not really sure what breed they want they just want something cheap or free with full health and hip guarantees . RUN FAST .

I am not a breeder, but I thought I would put my $0.02 in especially since being screwed over by someone recently who buys and sells dogs (NOT the person we got ours from):
1. Beware of someone claiming to not only be a K-9 officer, but a Law Enforcement officer overall. Check out their claims with the supposed Department of which they are an officer.
2. Beware of someone looking for you to "donate" a puppy to them to be used in Law Enforcement or some other K-9 activity such as Search and Rescue, etc. unless they can provide the credentials for their request.
3. Beware of someone looking for "free" or "difficult to handle" dogs that claim to be a professional dog trainer/police K-9 trainer. Ask for a veterinary and/or professional references.
4. Beware of someone only interested in "hard" or overly aggressive dogs.
5. Do a quick google search on the person's contact information just for a brief introduction about that person. (You'd be surprised, no doubt.)
6. Beware of someone wanting to buy the puppy "today" with "cash in hand."
7. Beware of someone with "years of ownership experience with German Shepherds," but they can't provide a single veterinary reference.
8. Beware of someone sketchy in their ownership history with German Shepherds (especially if you are selling a puppy not to be re-sold, etc.). This is important if they have owned several (8+ dogs) in a span of 5 or so years, but they no longer have any of the dogs.

Sorry my fingers are working too fast...
Yes, you guys should get a DNA list; to us rescue people that take in all the unwanted dogs and dogs that are dumped in drop boxes at shelters; that is a DO NOT ADOPT to list...we don't "OFFICIALY" have one...yah right!!!
There should be a DNA list for buyer and breeders....
Or one just might make sure that they research either side before making a decision, we have an application form that is filled out and checked prior to adoption. We match the dog with the family to the best of our ability...after it is re-trained, socialized, AND "FIXED"!!!
I just picked up a 4 yr old GSD that was dumped at the local shelter drop box, she is gorgeous and was surely a registered GSD, has had numerous puppies, not spayed, tons of ovarian cysts in her when I got her spayed and Pannus in her eyes...she was a breeding female
It is appaling all the unwanted GSD's out there, I even had a breeder ask for my help in placing one of their dogs, because she didn't think it would fit in with hers...go figure!!!
Darn I don't want to get started, but please BREEDER's, think before you breed for the money, and think of all the unwanted GSD's out there, look at how many rescues are popping up because of too many dogs...
There are over 7,000 GSD's on Petfinder.com, I have about 7 of them and fellow rescues have 20+ local YOUNG GSD's in their rescue...I have placed over 145 GSD's in the last year and a half, what is that saying about the breeding practises...
I even have a dog that the people paid $3000.00 from a breeder and turned her into me, rescue, after 3 years...go figure...
Please!!!! Please!!!! Please!!! THINK OF ALL THE HOMELESS DOGS OUT THERE BEFORE YOU HAVE ANOTHER LITTER!!!!
THANKS FOR LISTENING...BTW; I USED TO BREED TOO...NOW I JUST RESCUE THE UNWANTED!

I totally agree. I know... I just didn't want to say too much in the way of id'ing a particular person. But, there are also breedings with sires and dams younger than 2 years old, if I recall correctly. Just sayin' maybe folks should keep an eye on things... although I'm not sure what good could be done. If someone is willing to listen and learn and admit their inexperience, maybe some good could come.

THINK OF ALL THE HOMELESS DOGS OUT THERE BEFORE YOU HAVE ANOTHER LITTER!!!!
This is why I urge every breeder to tattoo and m/chip their dogs before they send them home with those people who seemed like perfect owners at time of adoption. Like I teach my advertising sales trainees right from the start: Customers LIE. Some of them are pretty damned good at it. I brought my pups into this world. I am responsible for them throughout their lives, almost as if the buyers just have them on loan in my mind. Screw up and I want them back!!!
I just wish all breeders felt this way. As much as I hate dog-breeding legislation, I'd be all for a law that penalized breeders who do not m/chip their pups and list themselves as original contact on every pet-return database extant, then keep their contact info current forever! When I am finally Queen of the Universe, this is how it will be. Till then, we must all try the best we can to see to it those poor, nice dogs that people less responsible than ourselves have brought into the world get the loving, responsible, forever homes they so desparatly need and deserve.
Every time I watch Dog Town I have dreams about being able to build a super non-instutionally designed facility, with great staff and vet facilities, and a humongous marketing program & screening process to draw/screen potential adopters... + a K9/SAR training program for potential LE/SAR dogs, to take up for all the greedy, money-grubbing, and just plain stupid GSD breeders in this country someday.
Grrrrr....

Thank you Shelley!!!
You are a little more politically correct than I am...
LOL... I get so pissssssed at times, especially when I have rescues coming out of my ears, like now... and then I see on the boards--2 litters coming, I figure okay in about 8 months I will have more GSD's coming in, that is the average age for the tykes...rescues...
Best Friends of Utah, sends me their senior GSD's, cause they know I am a sucker for the old timers...;-)
Thanks, Steph

There is a special place in my heart for old dogs. It breaks my heart to see an old dog in rescue (or worse) having been tossed to the curb by the owners he loved. I can not understand how anyone could "get rid of" an old dog. I see the reflections of my own old dogs in their faces in the pix and my old heart just melts. I just hope the odd crumpled up fiver or tenner I stick in an envelope with the name of the old dog on it helps a little.
Surely God has a special place in heaven for the wonderful people who open their hearts and their homes to give those old dogs the love and care they so desparately need and deserve, if only for a short while before the end.
One example, just one...
Holling, (GSDRNE) I never met you but I KNEW you the minute I saw your beautiful working dog temperament in your eyes and your actions in these pix. I followed your story and you touched my heart. You could have been any one of dozen of dogs I knew but for an owner who didn't care about you anymore than to dump you to fend for yourself. I know you are long gone now, but your memory will live on in the hearts of everyone who read "your" blog when the wonderful woman who saved you, gave you a new name and a new life, wrote on your behalf. God rest your soul while you wait for her and all the other dogs she shepherds to the bridge behind you.. I'm just so sorry there are so many great old dogs who have not, will not be as fortunate as you in the end.

Doesn't Canada mandate all registered pups be microchipped?? Seems like a good requirement for AKC papers to me.
I tattoo AND microchip all my puppies. Damn straight I want them back!

Okay, Shelley! You not only hijacked the thread, you damn-near made me cry!!
I saw a 14 year old gsd once, that had been left at a boarding kennel for years. When she heard the sounds of bitework at the training field, she "lit up" and started barking. She'd never lost that drive. The spirit remained willing, but the flesh could not keep up. The ____ left her, because of a zoning ordinance in the development forbidding fences. These people had big bucks--they couldn't afford to build a kennel, or at least try to get an exemption? They never even visited her.
