My dogs are outside in weather that is comfortable for them (how do I know? because I pay attention to their body language and other signals) and if the weather is totally sucky like subzero cold or high heat/humidity, they come inside. Yes I adjust the temp for them. I believe dogs are intelligent, complex social animals in their own pack structure of which I am the alpha. I also believe in a well rounded dog pertaining to training, experiences, socialization. I don't let just anyone interact with my dogs nor do I let my dogs play with other dogs outside my pack. I feed, train, work, play with my dogs, my family helps out when I am unable to do it all, but I am still the primary person.  My dogs have bonded to me. I do believe dogs need fresh air and all the interesting things that they see, smell, and hear outside to keep their mind engaged outside of training, but I also believe that they should spend time with the pack & alpha, not just in their individual runs. But to each his/her own. What was the saying about the only thing 2 trainers can agree on is what the 3rd one is doing wrong?

There are no hard and fast rules BlairBuilt, no magic bullet to producing the best working dog, some people believe one thing others believe another, some things work better with some dogs than others.  You have to do what is best for you and your dog.

Here's what I use to do..

When working a dog before a trial (4 weeks prior) i start lettting it be a litlle bit more and more alone ( in his run) and one week before the trial the dog comes out just to interact with me and for training..Get it's drive up the more the trial is coming.

I don't believe in doing it on a everyday basis..Ad I don't believe doing is making the dog better..MO

i think you should listen to Moon he got it right. and i like to say any of you who think you have to keep adog in the kennel for it to work properly then i will say you are fucking moron and dumb ass.dogs work and certain jobs if they have the drive for it and propper training period.some people like to keep their dogs in the kennel there is nothing wrong with that as long as they get proper interaction with thier loved ones. some people like to keep thier dogs with them in the house and there is nothing with that.keep it in mind dogs are social animal like ourselves.but everything else is just you trying to jutify what little you know about dogs. have a nice one.

Held
I for one do not keep a Dog in the kennel because i think it will work better,I keep it in a kennel because i think the dog is healthier living outdoors than it is in doors plus it suits me as well, and it has done that for 57 years without any problems
Something i will never change and i do not think anyone will who's dogs in in the house
Overall  many of you guys over in the USA  think differently about dogs than we do over here, and saying that you do not think any more of them than we do,It is just your  perception of what a dog wants and needs that is different from us over here

Steve1, I don't think that what people believe is best for their dog goes by countries, I believe as my aunt did.

My aunt in Germany who passed away many years ago and raised working GSDs since before WWII had dogs that spent majority of their time outside but were allowed inside to be with the family. She never called herself a breeder, just someone who believed in good dogs bred for a variety of hard work and long hours. She believed a dog who spends time with the "pack" in the same "den" was a better dog. That included home, barns, outbuildings, and property. Her dogs did herding; newborn animal guarding; babysitting of her kids, grandkids, greatgrandkids; protection, tracking; running with the cart; and hauling their own carts with milk jugs, animals, and produce to the market. She always said "the fanciers were going to ruin the breed if the breed wasn't protected and bred for work".

Oops, sorry Steve1, forgot to add, that what I just wrote wasn't intended as a slam or negative toward you in any way. I live in the US and my family is from Germany (mostly), Norway and Finland. I have friends from Russia, England, and Argentina. We all seem to believe the same way about dogs. I don't know where you're from.
Again, not intended as a slam, bitchiness (though I have been accused of being a bitch more than once which to me is a compliment ), or a negative.

I knew it would be that kind of thread when it started...all we know for sure now is that opinions are like A$$holes, everybody's got one. My opinion: I like my dogs outside in the day time and of course I work with them and exercise them and play with them. They go to the woods and the lake and open space with me. I like the dogs inside my house at night, for protection. Hot burgarlies are the worst; dogs deter burglars. But then, I don't have beaucoup dogs. (I don't have lots of dogs, for the French challenged.)
