Missbeeb,
Yes, crowns and caps, too. Many of the schutzhunders have had to get caps on their dogs, when they snap a canine. It happens, just one of those things. Some dogs never become accustomed to the cap and it ruins their grip. Others have no problem with it. I know of a Dobie woman who had her dog's broken canines capped with titanium. Talk about intimidating!! We also have root canals done. I had to have one for my old bitch. And let me tell you, the dog's dental work costs just as much, or nearly, as a human's does!!
The root canal cost me about $1200 6-7 years ago.
Jean,
Consult a dental veterinarian or two. Perhaps then, you can understand and accept the existence of braces.

Rexy, you say that the breeder of your dog told you that your boy's pedigree makes him suitable for Protection Work but the thing is it's NOT only about his pedigree,
And next time before you choose to Tar the whole breed TAKE YOURSELF OFF AND HAVE A LOOK AT A GSD Specialty Show and have a look at the OPEN CLASS dogs.
On second thoughts DON'T. I am happy for you to own the best GSD in OZ.
Have you done any work with your dog??
Any obedience titles ?
Show titles ?
By the way we do have a large number of "German Imports" in Australia these days and unforunately not all are good ones and most have working titles but not nessassarily passing their working ability on. A poor stud dog can only do sooo much.
The puppies owners have to do some work also.

The breeder of my GSD places emphasis on maintaining the standard of temperament and working ability of the dog and will not use soft low drive dogs in the breeding program. The point is, if the dog instinctively doesn't have the required drives, no amount of training will convert a nerve bag into a front line police dog or Schutzhund champion will it???.
I have never seen puppies marketed on the basis of results from Specialty Shows, it's all about the results of their ancestory bloodlines in conformation, you know that as well as I do???. Considering that absolutely no working ability is required of a GSD whatsoever in Australia to achieve conformation titles, how the dog rates in compliance with the breed standards other than conformation, a prospective buyer is in "no man's land".
My GSD is a long coat, he doesn't comply with the breed standards for showing, and confirmation shows are not my interests for the dog. I have had show line Golden Retriever's for 26 years and tired of the skittish behavior, kinks and fears that many Golden's exhibit and didn't want the same in a GSD other than wearing a different jacket. The amount of nerve bag timid GSD's I know of and have seen bred on wonderful conformation, unless you do your research as to who is breeding what, you can end up with a GSD with the temperament of something else.

Rexy,
Even though your male is "long coat' that does Not prevent you from having Obedience titles.
Please STOP this GSD's wearing Jackets / LABRADORES/ Golden Retrieviers Wearing Jackets.
Go back to Labs & golden Retrievers and do us all a favour.
