Hi Pod!!! You're my hero :)
Anywho - the fading of the pigment on the inside of the leg isnt caused by the extension locus nor the agouti locus. That kind of fading occurs at the Intensity Locus, and the fading is actually dominant to the not fading.
Int – dilutes tan to dirty white
intm – dilutes tan to light yellow
int – no dilution (wild type)

This is the dam of the pup I had a few years ago. She is definitely the most "RED" sable I've ever run across. The others just look "sable".

She virtually looks like a red Siberian - just not white base!

My guess - not very educated - would be this is just a young purebred GS. I see no features outside colors that would scream "mutt". But then, I've been wrong (both ways) before.

Right, definitely not A or E, as these are pattern loci not shade, but I've not heard of the Int locus targetting any particular areas of pigment, just phaeomelanin in general, as other diluting loci do. If you've got references, I'd be interested.

Pod, kudos to you for researching color genetics. It boggles my mind and I have problems getting past white x white and I'm still not sure if Blitz is black and tan or sable LOL. A member of my breed list is like you, she is so knowledgable about color genetics and I am in awe every time I read one of posts. I'm glad to know people like you; you have been a great teacher for me.

marci: It would be ashamed if we never get a difinitive answer to this question. I might have to re-think my statement that this is a mix, but I will not until you can answer this question.
What other dog breeds are located at the home of this dogs mother, when she was in heat?
If they only have GSD's, then I will re-think. If they have other breeds (males) there, in particular, Mals, then I bet I am right.
Very unusual cage I might add. Does not look very good for poop removal, urine could soak in and it looks like wood that could be chewed easily. Very unusual.

Marci,
There is a BYB in N.E. Ohio who purposely breeds for this color. She has several I believe. They are purebred.
Scroll down the link and you'll see a couple of photos of dogs of the colors of the puppy above.
