Thank you Rik, a very beautiful dog in that link, must be a pride for the owner and the breeder, it is even, if I am not wrong, a sable dog of healthy proud and beautiful look.

Sunsilver, no, you did say level in one of your many badly worded posts, some time back. You were pulled up about your use of the word level, and replied saying you meant straight. Seems you make a habit of badly wording your posts..... Firstly on the picture you posted of someone elses puppy you said" With his head UP" then " thrust forward". Which is it then, up? or forward? as they are completely different.
Roach in the backline??? Bit more of a myth than fact, do you guys never get tired of the same old topics. This subject has been debated to death, all one has to do is search this site, no need to start yet another thread on this age old subject. I noticed it is always the same few people, with almost non exsistant knowledge of show dogs, who comment on the issue of "roach" in the S/L. YAWN!!!

" What causes a ROACH BACK? "  Sometimes when I have a real hacking cough it causes my back to roach, and even more so with a severe tummy ache, jeez!!!

and also, how about this dog, who was mine. I choose him from the German s/l (after a trip to Germany) because I like the s/l and do not like the roach. How simple is that for you authorities to understand.

The ones I see here offering opinions on this matter, do absolutely nothing to correct. Only offer endless comments. And, yes, I did pay for the pic posted.

I have no understanding for those who only complain. If you view something as wrong, then put your time, efforts and finances in what you consider correct.

Do not waste your life looking at what others do and offering criticism. Create what you see as correct.

this is JMO and I am sitting here, retired at an early age,

I think this puppy is close to perfection in each detail, true straight slightly sloping back, very pleasing to the eye, as I am more aware of the feet nowadays, I see now what correct feet and toes are, makes me wish my dogs' feet and toes were like that. What a beauty, one doesn't need to be a conformation master to recognize a beautiful dog, real eye catcher, makes my heart ache.

Thx for the post Rik! Are you a breeder yourself or no? :) I would love to see a website if you are!

Anyways,
First off, to those who categorize showlines as "bad breeding" you are mistaken. Bad breeding is when you don't breed for health, temperament, and workability first but the "showiness" of the dog. Reputable breeders strive for the bettterment of the breed, and like Rik said, a sloping back to other things is a minority. If the dog is healthy, and is not extrememe (I am sure all of you saw the half dog half frog video on youtube), then I don't think there is anything wrong with the show lines. If you like working, fine, that's great you can get a lot more drive..however, the SL has nothing wrong to it, if hips are tested, health checks done, proved itself true to the breed such as Sch and Herding, and other various titles it can obtain, then I do not think there is anything wrong with the slight curve/roach. The standard calls for slightly. Then if you are breeding to that standard to IMPROVE the breed and regard your breeding to standards then do you think that is really fair to say it is BAD BREEDING?
Good thread..

The very selective filming that I think you're talking about is... crapola!  4 dogs, yes, 4 dogs were used to make this poop.  It doesn't take a genius to work out what was going on there... or does it?

Many SL dogs work too.

by GermanShepherd<3 on 19 December 2010 - 04:12

I think you misunderstood what I said.
I meant that if you don't end up going there like those dogs were even if there was only a few and you are breeding as best as you can for the standard I don't think it is bad breeding. I honestly love SL, they are my favorite.

And yes SL CAN WORK THEY ARE GERMAN SHEPHERDS! That's one thing people forget to consider when judging them IMO. When I will get a puppy, the first thing I will look at is the working ability of the parents and health tests done.

But I have seen breeders in my area breeding for the "showiness" by trying their best to exxagerate the slop and roach, or focusing on just one thing to fix and forget the rest. Some even breed without working titles.

I hope this made sense..I see many breeders heading down a bad path, yet many still trying to improve the breed :) I was just trying to prove my point SL breeders are not "bad" or crappy dogs.

Have a great night!
