I would encourage you not to repeat this breeding until you see how the dogs mature out. If they are weak in the rear like this boy, you are not contributing to the breed in a way that you want to.

Well, I can assure you I will not breed again until I see how the male pans out. But as I said of the 6 pups only he seems loose in the back, but then again he is much bigger than the rest.
Pup is 5.5 months.

Klekoni, please look again at the female. To me, she looks the same as the male. No, she is not as loose and cow hocked, but has the same slippiness and weakness in the rear in my opinion. Please post more of the sire moving...seemed to me that he had a weak rear also. I'm not a show dog person, so maybe the weak rear is just a show dog thing as I have yet to see one with a strong, well developed, muscular rear. But, I haven't seen many this bad. I hope it tightens up for you. The ears would worry me because your males show little strength or life. The females at least have some body to them. But if they were up once, yes, they should go up again. Best of luck to you.

I agree with Yellow Rose. He is a big loose puppy that needs special care. He has good angles and croup. He could easily mature out of his looseness. He is very attractive, has good pigment, head, type also. Video is not clear so it is hard to be more specific. I think he is a bit overweight. It is not uncommon to have cow hocks on such a big loose, well angulated puppy. He may mature out of this.
Overall the puppy has promise and looks interesting. Some would tape the ears, I for one would, but it must be done properly. I think you have a very attractive GSD. I really like his looks a lot. Good luck to you.

Thanks Preston for the comment.
Yes I agree he does have some great attributes that you so kindly pointed out. His looseness is defo getting better by the day I feel. No he is definitely not overweight, however because of his plush coat he does look that way. Get him wet though and you can see that it is not so!
I am closely monitoring his ears and may splint them in the next few days just to be sure, but will keep a close watch either way.
Apart from this he is also quite a character!

Looks cow hocked. Overall weak legs. Is he kenneled or crated for long periods. Looks like he needs more exercising on soft surfaces. I do not like to see pups that large.

did you say you breed the pup at this age??

by Jenni78 on 15 October 2010 - 19:10
He is big...but not terrifyingly so. He could mature out of his gangliness.
I wish I'd taken videos when Caleb was a puppy. He was never cowhocked, but he was loose and gangly (IMO) and huge for his age. If I remember right, he was well over 60lbs by 6mos...so not far off from this pup. He turned out just fine, according to the conformation critique thread I put up the other day;-)
