What is a melanistic bi -color?  How would you know one if you saw one?  I'm beginning to fall in love with bi-colors.

Melanistic bi-color is just a bicolor with a lot of extra dark shading. The dog in my icon is a bicolor, but not a particularly melanistic (highly pigmented) one. He's bicolor with the black recessive. I've seen bicolors without the black recessive, and they have the toe-marks and the tarheels, but tend to have some tan on their eyebrows, cheeks, and chest, sometimes.

My dog has the black recessive...AND all the markings you mention. Amount of black is not necessarily indicative of presence of black recessive.

This isn't a bi color right? She was papered as blk/tan.She got darker as she got older. When she was a pup she had more red on her face. Wish I never sold her.

LAVK-9,
I think Molly has said that if the GSD had brown behind the ears or under the tail it was considered a Black & Tan , not a BI-color....if I remember right?

I was thinking that too but I don't think she had it under her tail.It has been so long since I have had her.
This is her mother

LAVK-9 - the pup is not bicolor, she is losing her toemarks/tarheels in the picture.  she has brown behind her ears, and color on her belly/underchest - not bicolor.  the mom is a bicolor.
