Okay, the stories are in about Shiloh jumping ability!

Some of these suprised even ME!

Jim: I just know from experience that Dylan can jump a 4 foot fence without needing a running start - he just jumps up and over

Zwanet: One day last winter she was sitting in front of our outside table, chairs were standing all around the table too. Then I noticed her watching something on the table (little bird or something) She jumped from sitting down, right on the table! The table is almost 29" high and Shima was maybe 9 months back then and surely NOT 29" high.

When I asked for permission to share her story, Zwanet replied: Ok with me, and tell them the jumping came from the kangaroo. Then tell them to ask you about their swimming ability, lol!  (Most Shilohs love water.)

Karin: Galen can easily clear 4 feet, and does it with such grace you would think he does it every day. It's a thing of beauty to watch him.

I have an office chair in the kitchen at the computer corner, and one day he and Leilu were playing (zoomie time). I just happened to swing around in my chair at that moment, and Galen hit the brakes, but was clearly going to hit me. He couldn't veer to the side, as I was between the desk and the table, and there wasn't really anywhere for him to go.

Sliding into me at a furious speed, he made the decision to avert disaster. He just went over me. I'm going to guess that was around 5 feet.

Anne: I have seen him leap clear over Kola who stands a solid 30" at the shoulder, and in typical MC fashion he can from sitting deposit himself cleanly on our mattress which is a good 30" off the floor. (This dog's call name is MIschief, or MC for short.)

So, there you have it!  If you own a Shiloh, you'd better have a good, tall fence!

I am a  bit confused, as I was thinking warm fuzzy thoughts about these big shepherds, but see this:

http://www.americankingshepherdclubinc.com/Champions.html

Am I reading this correctly?  Is the Obedience Grand Victor a CD???  That isn't right, is it?  There must be at least a handufl of King Sheps with UDs????

Or is this breed much more limited than we are saying?

Gennie: The avatar is actually Ace the Wonder Dog, who followed Rin Tin Tin in the movies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ace_the_Wonder_Dog

Unfortunately, as is the case of Rin Tin Tin, as well, virtually all his movies were not preserved.  Sad.

And Ash is great looking!

Sunsilver: if they can jump as you say (and I believe you) then there is something wrong with their owners.  Somebody needs to take a good King or Shiloh through the jumping titles and show the world what they can do.  Otherwise, they maintain official status as a big, fluffy dog.

Heh, thanks for the compliments on Ash, I of course have to agree that he is great looking :)  I have never heard of Ace the Wonder Dog, I will have to check into him!  I know of Chinook, whom Sunsliver mentioned, as he is also in one of my girls' pedigree, but since all of that stuff was WAY before my time, there are many old movie dogs that I apparently don't know about.  He definitely is a Rinty clone!!  Shame that his movies weren't preserved, I wonder if there is anything available on Youtube to check out of him?  WOW, PD screwed up while I was submitting.

Bucko, nope, the problem is with the kennel club, that will not allow rare breeds to compete!

Due to a conflict between the 'splinter' shilohs, the ISSR and the ARBA, the ISSR Shilohs are no longer recognized by the ARBA. I THINK the only competition venues still open to them are the IABCA, and (possibly) the UKC!  I must confess that was one of the reasons I held off so long on getting a pup. But, I think the breed is MUCH closer to recognition than it was a few years ago. I'm seeing much greater consistency of type.

Here's another story:

Pam: No problems clearing 6 feet high without a running start. I was amazed.

I'm willing to be the guy to put a UD on a big shepherd if they can jump like that.  The KC should be kicked in the seat of te pants for limiting their capacity to show their stuff.  Why can they compete for CDs (you see a few of them) but nothing higher????

There is not a decent gsd in the world who cannot earn a UD with 190s with a decent handler.  Are you under the strong impression that these kings and shilohs are up to this?

And how are they keeping the gene pool open and growing?  Are either Kings or Shilohs still crossbreeding with good gsds???

Thanks!

~Buck

4+ feet of jumping, especially if the barrier is firm (like a fence) is impressive.  Too bad the first-movers into this breed were so into all that long hair and size.  If some serious working people had taken the gsd bigger, and focused on these great jumpers, you'd now have a competitive dog which no one (like me) could ever poke fun at!

I think that a U-CDX plus CGC minimum breeding requirement (with OFA Fair Plus) would insure that they not become Leonbergers with upright ears.  Although I understand that some Leo's have very good hips.

Isn't today the day of the puppy evaluation -- do you use Volhard?

by ProudShepherdPoppa on 26 September 2009 - 22:09

My wife breeds and shows rare breed dogs (Biewer Terriers) and I get the opportunity to see many Kings at the various shows.  All in all they are magnificent looking animals.  Granted, at shows you should see the best of the best but they are still impressive.
