* "Any horse I've swam, swims at about my average walking speed, and believe me I don't walk at 30 mph." *

-- I disagree. Non cripled horses can and do swim fast (I say non cripled horses because most people who swim at equine pools swim because the horse cannot jog, gallop, breeze with (pound) leg pressure and almost always have the shank on), faster then a walking human. Especially if trained in deep waters for speed.
A horse can and does literally switch from a fast walk to a jog to a gallop in the water if willing to create speed. Just like a dog, deer etc. This is called the porpoised rate of speed. Nothing like 30 mph, but do in the low teens. Horses like this sell to the Water Polo peeps like hot cakes. The average speed of a human walking is prolly 3, 4, 5 mph maybe.. depending on fit of a male or female and of course environment/elements. That's shy of an hour for a mile for the average peep. Now throw a human racer in there and up the speed to 8 mph.

But I dunno.

Hmmm, I don't think the average horse would swim that fast, only if prodded, and I was referring to an average horse.  I'm sure they can swim faster although I doubt they can go in the low teens for long without a lot of training. JMO.

12 mph is jogging speed, and approximately a 41/2 minute mile.
I have swam big muscled studs, with only a sore foot as an impedement, and I don't honestly think it slowed them down much.  That had me at a fast walk. This was in an outside pond, and yes, of course on a shank.   Anyhow, it doesn't matter, as this is totally off subject, I was just commenting because there is no way in hay a horse swims at 30 mph.

Well GARD you have been in the truck while I have ran my dogs. If anything, my speedo is 2-3 mph slower than the police radars they set out around town. I pass a street sign with a radar on it, daily on my way to work. Trick did over 30mph on a daily basis, his cruising speed was closer to 26mph. No way no how, will Baden hit his top speeds next to the car, so I have no way of knowing but he isn't in the running for fastest dog anyway. Bax can still hit 26-27mph for short bursts, that's pretty good for an old lady but she LOVES to run. My Faust is still too young to road run but he is at least as fast as Bax when they play ball together.

Jim I missed your last post some how but agree that some dogs just really love to run full out, you can see the enjoyment on their face. Others do not, Baden is the not. Road running isn't for him, he needs to see stimuli to hit his top speeds. Little brother Faust, seems to enjoy pushing himself and what a jumper he is too. I encourage speed by playing ball with all 3 dogs at once. Only 1 ball, only 1 winner.

Like I said, I am not saying anyone is lying. Jim had a gun on his dog and yes I saw 4packs old dog run along side a truck @ 30 mph. All I am saying is these are by far an exception and not a rule, as far as GSD speed in my experience.

4packs dog was totally a-typical as far as GSD's. this dog was built for speed. He was extremely tall, slight bone, long body, long legged, and never had an ounce of fat on him. In fact, I had never seen a GSD built like him before, and have not since.

Slamdunc,
In my original post I questioned your report that your dog "trot" back at 26 mph.  I had not read your second post at that time whereby you clarified your self.  I rebuked my own post later on after reading your second post.

I will stick to my guns on what I have said about critical thinking.  Way too many simply take any kind of nonsense in without ever researching, or worse, using the brains in their head to think about it's probability.  Take your dog to town and count how many people stop and show their complete ignorance on gsds because of some old stupid crap they heard 30 years ago and have never bothered to research.  Who has not heard of the guys buddies dog that weighs 160 lbs of muscle?

I question much I read on here, I always question the animal right activists crap because it is based on misinformation and down right dishonesty, yet many support them, even on this site.  Just cause someone says their dog can jump 14 ft. in the air,  I don't  accept it until I have given it some good thought.  I still question the 7-8 mph swimming, but if I am wrong I want to know it, hear the facts.
Thanks

P.S. I hope no one mis read my post on the 30 mph. swimming horse.  It is obviously bunk.  My point is that this person  made this claim and not one person that posted after her  bothered to even think about this claim.   I found this incredible.  These are the people that get scammed and if they don't it is only because a scammer has not come across them.  If you don't believe this take a look at how many laws are being passed across our nation that are out right taking our rights away as dog breeders, trainers etc. etc.  Duh.
