If a new breed is going to be made out of a crossing - seems to me that it needn't simply come from one kennel.
Clearly, I don't know much about the whole thing - but I do have a philosophical problem with that notion overall.
That being said - I love big GSDs and if a similar dog can be bred with a larger size and wonderful temperament and good health - why not?

You can't have a committee design something. They will never be able to agree on what it's supposed to look like! More importantly, Tina knows the lines she is working with like no one else. Because she's not working with a very big gene pool, she has to be VERY careful in planning her breedings, to prevent undesirable traits from surfacing. For instance, the Sampson bloodlines can produce hooked or ring tails, and faded masks, due to the malemute influence. She has to be careful not to cross two dogs with too much of this dog in their ancestry. She calculated the coefficient of inbreeding before doing any mating, and her affilated breeders must do so too.
And yes, she is hoping to get full breed recongnition at some point. It would have happened already, if the breeders who broke with her hadn't pulled so many good dogs out of the gene pool.
Here's an old, old link that summarizes the characteristics of the four foundation bitches of the breed:
http://www.shilohshepherds.info/The%20Fabulous%20Four.pdf It's very interesting reading!

I just want to point out that NOONE gave an answer to the mans question regarding wether or not is his AKC GSD maybe a shiloh...He really wants to know if it is GSD that was poorly bred or a shiloh that was registered false.
Everyone went off in a tanget about the breed, hating it or loving it what ever.. give the poor man an answer.
I dont know enough to say yea or nay..but geeze, I was hopeing for more than more petty fighting about a dog breed that some hate and some love.

Too funny, sunsilver. Stating as one of the reasons that you like "Shilohs" a SAR dog from 1977 when they were all AKC GSD anyway! So why wouldn't that dog have made you love the GSD as is?
I'm always happy to hear of ANY dog of ANY breed or mix saving lives, heck, there was a story the other week about a BIRD that saved a choking baby by raising the alarm, but really, if it's comparison as to which breed one likes because it's saved the lives of children or of any other people, honestly, the German Shepherd Dog is supreme.
Although there are many hero collies and Dobes and who knows what else, if "why I like these dogs" is their service because of all the lives they've saved, in war and peace and lost-in-the-woods, well, c'mon, the German Shepherd Dog is far in front of any other breed.

To the OP, JLB82, if your dog is registered as an AKC GSD, then that's probably what it is, and it isn't a Shiloh Shepherd since they, although they started out as originally AKC GSD, are no longer, but are GSD crossed with other breeds in the attempt to create a new breed. And hey, new breeds gotta start somewhere.
Love and enjoy your dog and if you like, get another of whatever type YOU choose, now that you know more. Everyone on here has gone through the learning curve. There is a lot of knowledge and helpfulness and friendship on this board, but there also a lot of pure-D meanness. Enjoy the first and ignore & forget the second. (Although some people do the opposite! )

can they be registerd as an akc GSD, i was wondering because my male gsd, has a lot of the same charecteristics. He is nearly weighs about 97lbs, and has some what of a long coat, and it is real thick boned and tall, he is really intellegent, im not a trainer, but you couldnt tell with the dog, he acts like he has been in training his whole life, he know english and does almost everything i tell him to do. But he doesnt have alot of drive, meaning he is really laid back, he never gets real excited like my other gsd. He is Akc registerd, just wondering if he might be a shiloh. His picture is up, he is four years old
97 lbs and not a single titled relative in the 3 gen ped? I can't fathom why he doesn't have any drive! What is there that makes you think he would have any? I can't tell you if your dog has Shilo in it or not but it looks to be just a whole lotta AM homebred junk, out front anyway. I didn't bother looking 7 gen back to see if there was anything good back there, wouldn't matter anyway, too far back. Sorry for being bitchy about it but your dog is crap, please don't breed it's rat face again, be it Shilo or GSD. He has a collie head and for a male at 97lbs, he should have at least a nice head on him.
I just get nausiated when people who don't even know what a "standard" is, breed their f---ing dogs! It's not too hard to see how we get an assload of shitters out there that can't work and barely resemble a GSD. For every Shelley or Molly we have out there doing all they can to do it right, we have 15-20 nobodies taking 2 steps back for the breed.

I have to assume you are deliberately ignoring Gandalf, in order to poke some fun at me:

And BTW, all of the current Shilohs have KariAnn dog somewhere in their pedigree. That's how highly Tina thought of that dog.

Again, AWESOME work by ALL the life-saving dogs of whatever breed and whatever mix, but I felt you were saying, well, I like the Shiloh because of these hero dogs when, although that's great, the GSD pretty much has the Hero category locked up (LOL).
