I have a question about the giardia. I understand it is difficult to diagnose but let's say it's laying dormant in a dog and the owner has never tested for it. (Not talking about you Vmom just a question this thread brought up) If it is an instance where it's brought out by stress can it go back to dormant again when there isn't stress? Or does it just stay active once it's evidenced?

I worked at a boarding kennel many many moons ago and I knew every dog there. I knew who was and wasn't eating, I knew who needed more excercise, I knew who needed the extra attention (and who didn't need extra treats LOL). I certainly would have been able to tell who wasn't feeling good or if there was a change in looks or behavior! Sounds to me like they were cleaning and feeding and not paying attention to the charges. No matter what was wrong it should have been noticed and you and your vet should have been notified! I hope he's feeling better soon.

thank you sparrow-thats how i feel !!!!! i just got back from vet & kennel- first venzos doing much-much better, vet says hes looking good, as far as deydration & stool. all blood & urine tests came back negative-for everything-which is good, he'll go back next week(as long as hes stays doing good) for a re-check & weight check-hopefully he'll put some on by then- so after this i travel to kennel-to speak to them-well of course they did nothing wrong-he insits nothing happened, yet he could no explain to me why he was dehyrdated on the day of pick-up or why did he have diarrhea when i picked him up ? he said he wanted to speak to my vet (ohhhhh) so i gave him the number & copies of my reports, he said he would get in touch with me after he spoke to my vet !!!!! so far i have not heard anything, but ill call my vet at the end of the day to see if they even called, he said there was no way he had diarrhea or it would be on his chart- i asked for a cpoy of his chart-"we throw them out when you check out" of course, so we'll see what happens next- i guess i'll have to go back tommorrow if i dont hear from them.

I don't think that it is that hard for a pacer to lose a pound per day in a kennel away from home. With stress, diarhea may rear it's head. The only thing that would bother me is the attitude and appetite after returning home.

The only thing that bothers me is the kennel owner says nothing was wrong with a dog that came in weight eighty someting pounds and left weighting 68 pounds with diahrea and looked emansiated, and they throw the charts away when you check out that is a crook of horse manure..........Did you advise your vet about their attitude and I hope the vet is stern about how healthy your dog was before it was dropped off and the kennel should have called you or the vet , immediately ,upon seing the obvious condition of this dog.....
Yes a pacing dog can lose weight,,,but if he wasnt eating and drinking,,the person incharge of the dogs daily routines is responsible to log and get help....plain and simple...
Call the Health Dept immediately and report this incident in writing....Same thing when I board a horse....the responsiblility is with the owner of the kennel ....He is licensed by the State and if not, hes gonna get his doors closed....
$575.00 is a large kennel boarding fee to pay to give you a sick dog back without a vets notice or showing they were treating your pet and had it under vets control..... this is as bad as the pictures of horses and dogs repossessed in raids all over the state for neglect.......why let someone get by with this.....if he paced and was anxious , there are solutions to that , also.....you dont just turn a deaf ear and look the other way , and let the dog die in the kennel......stupidity .....and there is not a cure for that...
DONT let this kennel owner get by with this.......let the vet secretary know what the kennel owner told you......call her or him and let him make the vet aware hes not a good person to be boarding a pack of rats...less a dog...

I think you need to relax a bit. I would wait until I have all the tests finished on my dog. I would want to know 100% what the situation was before I go threatening somebody.
$575 is a crazy price for 12 days, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the situation. $15 or $50 a day, my dog should be in good health.
Some dogs do not eat while their owners are away. Dogs are not like horses. Horses will eat anywhere and anytime. They are hay burners and nothing more. The intelligence of a horse is rather low in comparison to a dog. I have nothing against horses. My wife and everyone in her family owns horses. I think that they are beatiful to look at and fun to ride, but you can not compare them to dogs when it comes to behavior.

A dehydrated dog doesnt care if he lives or dies....that was the state he was in when she picked him up.
Horses are quit different from dogs,,,,horses dont care if you , are with them or not,,,they eat , breathe and do fine in a pasture all by themselves...they just cant worm themselves, or go find food if it runs out.......same difference for boarding a horse......gotta turn on a water hose and fill the trough no creek or pond on the property,,,the person boarding the horse has to provide safe shelter and food and water.......horses dont need people to nurture them like a dog is
Dog is mans best friend and they love the attention and having a Master..
A horse is one of a kind,,,,on his own and the Master he has , only brings his talents out by training and working him in a scheduled pattern....dont need to go any further , this is a gsd site...not a horse training session,,,I mentioned the horse as a boarding example of dehydrated ones found lately all over Texas from no water and no food......some boarded and some in the owners back pasture....

luv- you are so right !!!! my vet is aware & very stern, he was not happy to see my dog in this shape, as he just saw him the week we left & he was fine, by the way i have two horses also a morgan gelding & paint mare- i also boarded them while i was gone, they came back as happy &HEALTHY as they left- don- i know there is a difference between dogs & horses, your right a horse will eat & drink as long as its there, but the point is if my horse did not eat or drink, the barn owner would have called me & vet-probably vet first ! what other test results are there ? none- the vet & i agree symptoms were there & ignored, end of story !!!!!

I think you are taking my post the wrong way. I understand that you have identified the symptoms, but what type of tests did your vet run? I'm not saying that there isn't someone to blame, but I just wanted to know what the vet found with tests. You said the dog was seen by the vet before leaving and is now ill. What is the illness?
