Just a heads-up to those who do ship dogs, always makes sure the airbill says that crate contains a LIVE dog before you sign it. I have personal knowledge of an airline's saying the dog was dead when placed on the plane.

I used to ship a lot within the US and Canada. Only had one bad experience when one of my dogs was "lost" in Pittsburgh. They found him a few hours later sitting in the freight office eating Milkbones fed to him by one of the baggage handlers .

echomuddles, it just so happens I titled a dog this weekend. Have you titled one yet? Will you ever? Or will you just continue to be a BYB?

Congratulations, spook!!! That's one brag I'll probably never have myself.

I bet you millions that if both the shipper and Echo made arrangements to have the dog tranquilized before being put onto the plane that none of this would ever happen. >>

I said "sounds like the dog has issues" - because he freaked in the crate before it was ever loaded on the plane, and on the plane he continued to freak to the point where he "ate his crate" and escaped.  Sounds like nerve and temperament issues to me, hopefully temporary but I sure wouldn't want a dog that couldn't settle in a crate or be transported without him freaking or needing to be tranquilized!  Also, as others have said - sedation is not allowed for shipping via airlines.

<<Euthaizing a dog for overacting in a stressful situation is not a valid cause. It truly amazes me how people euthanize a dog for such a ridiculous reason. I think in order for the euthanasia to be done, A dog must have an extreme case of bad temperament that cannot undo it's self with training and behavioral modification... that means several trained unspecified breed behaviorist/trainers must evaluate the dog before making the decision. The dog must be gravely ill (terminal/trauma).>>

The Euthanizing I was speaking of was in response to the airline saying they would euthanize the dog if an owner couldn't be reached.  Dogs cannot be loose in the airplane, on the tarmac or in the airport.  Especially freaked-out aggressive ones who just demolished the crate.  There would only be two options for this dog - catch him and put him in a new or repaired crate, which luckily the airline did - or euthanize him - meaning the security or airport police shooting him to eliminate the threat that he did present by being loose in the airplane.  The airline personel are not thinking about how bad his temperament is, or what kind of training or health problems he may have had - he was loose on the airplane and that was their immediate problem that they had to solve in some way.

So Echo,

Are you going to share the names of your new male and pup?

by EchoMeadows on 11 October 2007 - 15:10

OK the Female I shipped from New York,  with DELTA no problems at all !!   Her name is Aischa Von Der Gruebeck

She is on our females page on our website.

The Male's name is Yako,  I don't have his papers yet can't enter him here on the database until I get them,  the faxed copies I got are not Readable...  He is a Bax Son.   Shipped with United Airlines...  Some problems yes BUT big hats off to United for pulling it all together and getting the dog here.    I have not yet taken photos of him so he is not yet on our website.

Spook,  Congrats !!!    Oh yes of course we will Someday...:-)  Until then I'll just have the be the big bad BYB  :-)

No trial for our club this year,  Maybe this next spring they said.

Hey all. I just joined the list, in order to follow this line of conversation and others to come. I own one of EchoMeadow's dogs, "EchoMeadow's Silver Ezekiel," AKA, "Zeke," from one of Echo's first breedings. (See photos at http://gone2thedogs.home.att.net ) I will be going for my guy's BH in 2 weeks and his AKC CD this winter, with more titles to come.  Yes, I am doing BOTH AKC Obedience and Schutzhund with Zeke, he is scoring high and aweing people wherever we go. I am friends with this breeder, I love her and I love her dogs, so now you know where I stand :-)

One point I find interesting that hasn't been brought up in this thread: I'm betting this poor Male had never been crate-trained! By all I've learned about this "Seller from HELL," it seems obvious she couldn't give a rip about the dog's needs, only her own, so the dog freaking out so horribly makes me think it wasn't comfortable in a crate. I feel the seller is to blame for all this dog's problems and horrors. Seeing how the female arrived, coming from a caring seller, completely calm, but a little shy after a 7 hour flight, vs how this  neglected male arrived, talk about two completely polar-different sellers! (BTW, I was at the airport when the female arrived, and I had hoped to greet the new male too but all the problems made his flight past my bedtime!)

Anyhoo...glad to meet all you other Shepherd lovers,

Cindee and Zeke

I will have to address the crate issue....  Yako seems to be fully crate trained,  when given the "Crate" command he complies fully...  I have to wonder what the hell happened at the Airline when the dog was initially dropped off,  The seller said he was fine,  Then after seller leaves something went terribly wrong and this dog wigged out...

The fact of the airline, and myself being unable to get ahold of the seller is in MY OP,  a really BAD situation,  But I found out too from United,  that because the dog calmed down after missing the first flight,  AND the combination of them NOT being able to get ahold of the seller was the deciding factor in shipping the dog onward, as they had contacted me and I made them aware that we were already in route to Portland for receiving of the dog....

I did NOT receive a call from the shipper all that night.... neither did the Airline,  That too makes me wonder,  Did the shipper know that if they could not get into contact with them,  that the airline would go ahead and ship the dog no matter what ??   The airline said if they had gotten in touch with her,  they may have refused the dog for shipping,  BUT they were stuck with the dog and afterall it had calmed down so that is why they sent it on the next flight....   Who Knows or Cares at this point.

He is here,  We really like him,  Confirmationally I am very satisfied,  Temperament is showing more and more Stable !!   He loves my daughter !!   Just awaiting the health screens.

And Furthermore I have learned what things I will NEVER do to a purchaser.   I was made to feel like a complete criminal who had to proove myself innocent with regard to the purchase of this dog.....   Pay this and that, and oh by the way you have to pay this, and ALL money has to be paid before I will send papers,  and no checks,  only WIRE...  Good LORD all mighty this was the MOST untrusting transaction I have ever done.

Total fees Follow

2,000.00 to purchase dog.  90.00 Crate X's 2 =180.00    75.00 Headache Fees,  60.00 Health Check,  65.00 Wire fee and 57.00 Wire Fee,   15.00 Boarding Fee,  5.00 Certified fee,  455.00 Shipping.

Total,  2,922.00

I should send back a bill for my "Headache" fees,    LOL,  I'm just kidding !!
