Zdog is quite correct that a dogs movement best demonstrates the correctness of their structure. Stacking especially shows proportion and angle comparison and overall type better than a dog in motion. While I am a longtime show dog enthusiast, I am concerned about some of the trends that have grown up such as round backs, steep croups, excessive angulation, excessive slope of topline (as a result of unbalanced angulation and/or short bones in the rear assembly. I am working on reducing roundness in the toplines of my dogs as well as steepness of croup. Every breeding is an opportunity to make improvements, but there is no perfect dog. Best Wishes, Jonah

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP EVERYONE...
SO, there is no real purpose for for an extreme stack? I should not be trying to force my dog to stand this way? just making sure because im just now in the position where i can really crack down on trying to train my dog (my kids finally went back to school) and this is one of the things i really needed to start working on. so if this "extreme" stack is just a fad, then i don't really need to try to do that---->>cause all fads fade and then what happens when its not popular anymore? Also the main thing i learned is--since my dog is a working line---he is not "expected" to do a extreme stack...right?
p.s. for the past couple days we've been working on "closing the door" , boss loves the air conditioner and when he goes outside (been over 100'f lately) he only stays a few mins then lets himself back in--he can open the door on his own, he hits it in just the right spot right below the knob with his nose and front feet....the only prob was he would leave the door open behind him...letting all the cool air out, so we were constantly getting up to close the door...well its a success! now all i gotta do is say " boss, close the door!" and he jumps up on it closing it back! lol..very cool, i hope after a little while of doing this that he will realize the door should always be closed when he comes in and maybe he will start doing it without having to tell him...well anyways i just wanted to share that cause i've never spent the time/knew how..to train a dog how to do anything more than sit-stay-fetch and down...so i was kinda pleased with myself and him..

Julie,
do you wish to show your dog in an SV style show? If yes, you need to teach him a stack and also pulling on lead. In addtion, he needs to stand still and tolerate his teeth to be shown, his testicles to be checked and to be measured with a Koermass (measuring stick). Also, get him used to gun shots!
If you do not wish to do that and/or if your dog is not of showable quality, when you do not need to bother!
Hope that answers your question!

CHRIS---I would love to do something like that but im not able, so yes answered my question, thanks....and hes already use to guns, my hubby's grandpa has 3 large gardens out here so they gotta do a lot of gun shootin to keep rabbit population down....from what i've noticed it doesn't bother him any. i mainly wanted to know if i had to do that in pics-to have a proper pic, even tho he was'nt doing any kind of showing.r is a regular stack fine.., and if i had to have him do that in order to say he was "trained",
p.s. thanks for your help but i kinda got the impression that you were answering me in a smart-aleck way, if im wrong then im sorry , but if im right then i don't see what i've done to deserve that, ive apoligized for offending you already, and like i said, im not looking for a arguement...

To me there is no purpose in anything "extreme" others than to outdo the next guy.
But stack pictures in any breed of animal are to present the animal in the same position as to make a comparison easier. The idea being that the conformation is shown off in the best possible angle. However a skilled handler can cover up slight imperfections (or not so slight ones) with a stack suitable to that particular animal. On the other hand, seems to -me that I have seen some dogs squished into a stack as seen on the computer, by some very non-skilled handlers and the result certainly was the opposite. And of course anything in between.
And just in case anyone had already said that, I get tired of the other stuff and all the show vs. working mess that I did not read through any but the first 3 posts......so I apologize ahead of time.

jehannum,
Again there was nothing to pissed off. As for what the german shepherd breed needs. It need more people to understand the standard before they speak. We dont need new opinions. The breed and standard is still intact.. lets focus on that.Fresh perspective = fresh new breed. i like the breed as it is now just fine.

That is absolutely right. People need to understand the standard before they speak out.
Julie, I honestly do not care what kind of impression you get out of my post. If you can't see why you deserve that, then I suggest you read your own posts. And if you still don't understand, just read them again, and again, and again. I personally think you just want to find approval with certain people here and howl with the wolves, but you are constantly apologetic that you are new to the breed. You are so busy apologizing that you forget that you want to learn something.

chris-um...hello? you are constantly forcing me to apoligize...everytime i ask a question, you are chewing me out because i asked it in way that you don't like, you could atleast inform me the correct way to ask...the correct terms to use...but it doesn't matter now, you've ruined this post and just proved others point of the way some of you treat newcomers when they ask a question, and i really wish you would stop talking about me like you know me, like you have me all figured out, you obviously don't cause you wayyyyy of mark, if you really knew me, if we would had started this conversation face-to-face you would know that it was only honest questions, i dont believe, i would like to believe, you would have not treated me this way, im gonna chalk this up to misscomunication and leave it at that..........
quote>>>>That is absolutely right. People need to understand the standard before they speak out.<<<<
i looked at pics of what the standered is suppose to look like, according to the rules....and extreme stacks look nothing like that....that was the whole point of the question...why? this is what i mean...before they speak out????not suppose to ask questions or give your reason for asking???
whatever, there are better people on this board for me to learn from, don't need to waste my time or words on you...good day sir...i said good day.!..
