Greenstar

When bold, pushy, proud, fearless Grimm arrived home from the airport at 9 weeks,  nothing fazed him-- the noisy airport, the shipping, the new home.. but, I knew my little "proud king" had just lost everything he'd ever known. So, for the first 5 nights, I slept on the floor in front of his crate, letting my hand rest in the crate so he could suck my fingers warmly and gently, to "nurse" himself back to sleep.. a comforting feeling for him.

Now at 8 months, my "proud king" is still bold, pushy,  proud. But, he's a very LOVEY dog... very affectionate. At night, we have special time together on the floor, and sometimes, as he drifts off to snooze, he gently takes my hand into his mouth again.. it's a very deep, close time for us. Trust, sharing... family. We "belong to" eachother.

So proud and pushy... but so loving towards me. He really seeks out the closeness. The emotional connection is something of value to him. I feel I really lucked out. It's the relationship, Agar. I think the depth of the relationship in a working breed that feels so *responsible* both to, and for, us... is amazing. It's the magic. :)

I have been wanting to add to this post, but just cannot find the words.  My dogs are so integral to my life that the thought of one day not being able to take care of them or not being able to have a large dog where I am, sends chills up my spine.  All of them different, all of them gifts that have enriched my life.  Lots of lots of joy in 4 legged packages.

He is my friend, my love, the partner I enter hell when the disaster strikes and most turn and run.

. He was purchased by 700 elementary school children for me when my 9/11 partner got sick and died.

He was there to help me grieve for my loss and make me feel again, when I thought I never would

He helped me through physical illness and post traumatic stress.

He knows my moods and when I need a simple nudge of his nose  or a sloppy lick . He is always there to greet me, play ball or go to work. He know when to be serious and when to be a clown. He smoozes with all the light attendents at US Air when we fly around the country.

He is full of drive yet able to sit by the side of a dying child and give comfort.

He is my strength he gives me a reason to wake up each morning after watching the late news.

He is my main man. He keeps me sane.

k9sar- you gave me goose bumps with that touching story.  What an awesome act of kindness those children did for you.  They are too young to appreciate just how much I'm sure it meant to you but hopefully one day when they are adults they will either remember it themselves or someone will share that moment with them.  Best of luck to you and your best bud!

Sunsilver,4pack,Kalibeck and policemom- Are we gonna have to seperate you 4? lol  What are you doing talking about willies; aren't  you supossed to be lesbians?  Jr.Mints anyone??

I foulnd out today my dog may have cancer.

I responded by getting drunk.

I should not post when inebriated. I shall try to behave myself from now on!

Thunder my 11 yr old boy was my retirement presnt to me from the police dept. I bought him the day after my paperwork went through, He knew I was in a lot of pain but stuck by my side till I got back on my feet. That's why he is here and my husband isn't, We had an instant connection he was 1 of 10 puppies came and sat on my foot and wouldn't get off and it has been love ever since. He has helped me through my mother's death, helped my neighbor's little boy learn to talk, and even discipline my kids. My favorite story about Thunder is the day we moved into our new house after the divorce. Well I sent him out for the paper without looking first and they didn't deliver it so he went and got the next door neighbors paper. From that day on  he has been the neighborhood dog.

Tyr my 2-1/2 yr old girl is just a goof she is so funny and so bossy. I bought her because the vet knew how attached I am to Thunder and we didn't think he would make it too much longer with his hips. But we worked hard and he is actually doing better at his last checkup. She loves Thunder and had pepped him up a bit. She can play ball till you can't throw any more. My only problem is she is very dog aggressive but we are working on that now.

Luger is my one year old boy the breeder gave me to him because Tyr has bad hips. Luger is a laid back riot. He isn't old enough to figure out yet but I think he is sure he is a labrador retreiver cause he won't get out of the pool. I caught him the other day standing in the shallow end with his feet over the side licking Tyr's face.

It is so much fun just watching the babies be dogs and running and playing while I sit with my best friend Thunder and just love on him., Thunder was my first GSD and I am a GSD lover for life.

Simply put, our Best Friend(s).

They love us in spite of all the mistakes we make along the way.

They forgive and forgive and forgive.

Which one wouldn't follow you to the ends of the earth and ask no questions along the way?

They're tough when the situation calls for it and can scare the crap out of some of the meanest people.

They can be big, furry pillows for our little children and the most ardent protector and babysitter to them.  Heaven forbid somebody try to bother their children.

Those eyes that can light up with fury at an intruder and those teeth that can snarl and gnash trying to get to them can turn around and later be eyes filled with sweet, adoration and a long, wet tongue that wipes your tears away.

They "let" us be the boss even though they "could" be.

They teach us the meaning of words like humility, compassion, love, patience, honesty and most importantly, TRUST.

Once you've been owned by these loyal companions, you truly know what it's like to have a FRIEND.

Aren't we so blessed?
