I used the lard and whole wheat pasta in addition to 7 cups of 50% Royal Canin/50% Exceed Chicken and Rice on two dogs that were imported and arrived in thin condition. This was AMAZING stuff that put on the weight for these dogs who would not gain weight eating 8 cups per day! Their coats are SO soft and I was amazed that the lard didn't give them diarrhea, but it didn't! I have since started using it on ALL of my dogs (lard/wheat) since nobody seems to have a wheat allergy here, and all of their coats are so nice. Without Birdy's suggestion, I never would have thought of this, and I have used salmon oil, wheat germ oil, flaxseed oil, olive oil, peanut butter, etc. My dog who likes to hang out in the kitchen NEVER eats off the counters...well, she removed the tub of lard from the countertop and ate a pound of it, so they must love the stuff!! hahaha Other than that, I feed either Royal Canine, a mix of Exceed and Royal Canin, AvoDerm, and Solid Gold or Canidae. I also give Solid Gold canned food (1/2 can per day per dog), and other supplements as needed, as well as a raw treat once or twice per week.

About 50% raw meat, 50% kibble, suppliments, etc. Red Paw musher's kibble, but I am trying Eagle Pack right now too. I feed, on a sort of rotating basis: green tripe, yogurt, raw beef (mushers's supply), whole ground chicken meat with suppliments--it's a musher's raw meat dog food mix called blue race diet, and I get scraps at the butchers, so they usually have bones, meaty bones, fat, etc. I also buy meaty bones at the supermarket when I can't get good scraps. Also glucosamine/chondroitin every day. (The dogs have their own freezer, plus in the winter, outside on the balcony works well too.) I'd like to do the raw veggies, as in a more complete BARF-like diet, but I don't see how I can do it easily for 8 dogs. Any suggestions? Veronica

Abady Complete Raw plus whole raw foods. My female is somewhat fussy and prefers freshly cut meat. Whole chickens hacked into fist size chunks are her favorite, and also economical. Energy and condition are excellent. I also add Show Stopper, which is mostly beef fat and amino acids. Abady makes several granulated feeds that are very high potency (5X kibble). They are good for putting on weight especially under stress or high activity. I consider the best feeds to be those that are closest to nature: Whole raw. Many vegetables are unsuitable raw, and some are altogether inappropriate for dogs, but most dogs will choose what they need given a reasonable choice. Best Wishes, Jonah

Martin's K9 Formula, I was introduced to this dog food in 1997 and I find it is very consistent in obtaining good results. Martin Lieberman has not changed his principles and the food is very reasonably priced, and the quality is outstanding.

I feed inexpensive dry dog food made in my state, supplimented with canned salmon, egg's added once a week, other thing's added as convenience allow's.  Cheese, veggie's, fish and scrap meat's, leftover's occasionally.

Sport's trail high protein, $20.00 for 50lbs.

27% protein

12%fat

4.5% fiber

Mostly based on chicken and yes it has corn,  I haven't read the label in year's...  Been using this for over twenty year's, even used it for Peafowl and Silver Pheasant.  Never been on a recall list.

Use it as a base and add the goodie's for overall health and fitness.   Treat's are carrot's, sometime's smokey link's..LOL

And they will stand on their head's for a cheese puff.

I've tried expensive dry dog food and found no improvement, the trick is the suppliment's.   I would feed more meat if I could afford it, but a good GSD can make do with what's available.    And there is alway's Deer season.

P.S. I'm feeding one yearling and three adult's, thing's change for puppies.

I used Burns when I had my girl, Kiri, with EPI. You can order it over the internet.

Birdy--the lard won't create loose stools??
