Harddawg, Maybe the way I worded it was unclear, so i will give it another shot. Typically the Shilohs have lower drive and energy, BUT there are still those that have the energy and drive to work and some do excel at herding and SAR. A friend of mine and her Shiloh compete all the time in herding trials and do very well. True, they are not bred for this, but since the GSD is the foundation breed, it only makes sense that those traits still remain to an extent.

Also, we live in the 21st century and in case you haven't noticed, the average dog owner just wants a nice companion. The average dog owner cant handle the demands of a typical WL GSD. They require a lot of exercise and a job. There is not the need for working and sport dogs as there once was, so why is developing an awesome companion dog/ service dog/ therapy dog such an awful thing? For every person who wants a hard core working dog, there are thousands who just want a companion dog.

As for recognition by a well-known breed club such as the AKC, it has always been a goal of the breed founder, but there have been many obstacles and the time is not yet right. Btw, if anything I say clearly contradicts Sunsilver regarding the Shilohs, she is much more of an expert than I am, so listen to her. Sometimes it is just the way things are worded that can cause it easily be misinterpreted, so I do apologize for that.

Well.....at the risk of starting a "Conspiracy Theory"

I have to respectfully ask again...........how many people commenting on this thread actually own, have worked with or purchased the dog of Topic?

This is  an International forum, and people come here to do their Research!

Let's try and keep things factual, I'm not looking for a fight, not disrespecting anyone....just asking for facts.

Someone came and spoke with me today about buying a dog....I told them the Real Facts (not what they wanted to hear) Just the facts.

These are not the Droids (GSD's) you are looking for......keep walking

Harddawg, I'm here because I love GSDs.  Just lost mine a month ago. I've had GSDs most of my life. I love the breed. I've had SL, WL and rescues of unknown lines. I loved them all.  Why am I defending the Shilohs? I have one.  I heard nothing but horrible things about the Shilohs on this forum and when my friend asked me to take one who had lost its owner I turned up my nose and said absolutely not. My friend was very persuasive and long story short, I met the dog and was so surprised to find out most of the criticism I  heard here was untrue. My Shiloh is confident, outgoing, protective, has strong nerves, is very balanced and intelligent. He also has good hips and is very healthy at 8 1/2 years of age. He's no Schutzhund dog for sure, but he is protective in the real world. He has backed up uninvited guests into a corner on our property on more than one occasion, yet he can also be a teddy bear and is also a therapy dog. He is the perfect companion dog.

I will say no more, but if you don't like the Shilohs that's fine, but get your facts straight before you go around criticizing them. They aren't GSDs and no one claims them to be. I love both breeds.

I first became interested in Shilohs and joined their forum sometime around 2005, when I lost my 14 1/2 year old GSD rescue. As I searched for another dog, I became aware of what a mess the America showline GSDs had become, and began thinking of a Shiloh as a possible replacement, because they lacked the extreme conformation of the showlines, and (except for being larger) looked more like the old fashioned GSDs I was familiar with

I gradually become more and more involved with the breed. In 2009 and 2010,I helped a friend whelp her first two litters of Shiloh pups. The picture in the second post of this thread is the pup I purchased from one of those litters. I have attended numerous ISSR Shiloh events, including 3 homecomings (their annual breed specialty)  One of these was judged by Fred Lanting, Tina's long time friend, and hip/orthopedic mentor.

Vonnisk, the adult dogs you saw 'for sale' were most likely retired breeding dogs. Many dogs do not look their best after whelping litters, and yes, some of those pictures were pretty bad. I actually asked the club photographer if she could persuade Lisa to let her take some better ones. Retired females are NOT sold, though, but given to suitable homes. Retired males and puppies are the only dogs I've ever seen for sale on the New Zion website.

Old fashioned gsd's? Are you seriously high? It's pretty clear what the old fashioned GSD looked like, we have photos. He surely didn't look like a Shiloh.

Sun thanks for that info about those retired dogs being rehomed. I gotcha now. I just whizzed through and didn't read anything--was just looking. As I have said before I knew Tina back in the day when we wrote letters. I would give anything to have those letters and pics now. I think she was a genius in a lot of ways and a little screwy in some others. But aren't we all? I know a few years back when I last talked to her, she invited me on the forum--I used to go over and read a bit now and again. And I'm not mad at the Shilohs--I think it is a shame how it all started out and how people did over them..................but I don't think they're very attractive, but then there are other breeds I don't either. Just my 2 cents for the night.................

Harddawg

If the picture of the dog you posted was....... "a little more ugly,... more mean tempered.... and as hard a drinker  as my Buddy ....K9 Pirate Solo"  (gone but never forgotten).

Then.........it would be clear what an old fashioned GSD K9 Pirate looked like.

Canczech Solo - the original K9 Pirate...he walked the walk...and talked the talk.

And....... I had the opportunity of being a part of this .....Magnificent Dogs life.

Well Pirate. We can get old fashioned or we can get really old fashioned. Either way, I'm pretty sure that "Shiloh's" don't look like old fashioned GSDs.

I was unsure whether the Shiloh could show UKC.  However, they can show Rare Breeds which includes ARBA. I know the White Shepherd can show UKC.  One of mine was a silver sable.  He was the most beautiful dog.

It's too bad there was so much in fighting and out fighting in both registration groups. It's not the dogs; it is the politics that hurt the showing.  It's sad because they are a truly beautiful breed.

Troopscott- FYI, I DO NOT HAVE A SHILOH, never have, never will..
What the hell am I lying about?
I simply stated Tina put her heart and soul into what she was "trying" to do. For that I give her A LOT of credi.
I don't know or care if they are recognized by any kennel club.
I simply stated the fact that Shilohs are being registered as German Shepherds, IS a topic for the German Shepherd forum .
I myself have some rather nice AKC and SV registered GERMAN Shepherds.
