A guy in a nearby neighborhood to my own took his girlfriends dog out by the canal and beat it half to death, then shot it.
There were kids in the forest witnessing the whole thing.
He got caught.
The local court threw the book at him and the girlfriend that instructed him to "get rid of the dog."
Good.
They're damned lucky I wan't on the bench.

When men rape babies, kill children inside an Amish school and women put their infants in microwaves, why would we expect them to treat animals any better?

Blitzen,
My thoughts exactly!! Our society is a violent society and until we recognize this, nothing will change. Indeed, humankind is a violent species often wreaking havoc and bringing pain and suffering to any one or other species that is weaker or compromised.
Sure, there are good things about Americans and humans, as well. But until ALL of us demand that such crimes be dealt with swiftly and decisively with appropriate punishments, and until we begin to spend money on preventing the causes of such violence (rather than spending billions and billions in a lame attempt to bring democracy to the rest of the world), attrocities will continue.
It is a fact that people who do some of these things might have been helped early on and showed plenty of warning signs. But they did not receive the interventions needed. The priorities of American society in general are completely up side down in my opinion.
In my area, a developmentally disabled woman has been keeping 70 plus animals in horrid conditions and intervention has finally been accomplished. She will likely be ordered that she can not have animals or have severe restrictions placed on her, as is appropriate. In another case, some idiot here has been "docking" pit bull and other canine ears, without any anesthetic, training, sterile instruments etc., and when the ear gets infected and starts to die, he just cuts the entire ear off! And people were taking dogs to him!! He likely will be convicted of a felony animal abuse, but so what? He will simply move some place else out east in less populated areas and continue on. It happens all the time here and no one can do much about it. Why? Because society does not demand that we have better enforcement and regulation and punishment.
We don't give a damn about our children or our elders or the disadvantaged. Why should anyone give a damn about breeders who breed and breed and breed and sell to the first person who comes along with money because that is all it is about...money? What a sad state of affairs!
Merry Christmas?

Dogs have always been my one refuge in coping with the craziness out there. Changing and enforcing laws that protect animals is a slow process. In the meantime, we all have the power to help the dogs that will pay the price of this snail-pace reformation.
Open your mouth and berate the friend or relative who does something you don't like. How many people just freeze and look elsewhere (hiding their faces, so the disgust isn't detected), but SAY NOTHING. We've all heard the popular excuse--"It didn't work out, and I just couldn't keep him. He needs someone who has more time." AND, nauseatingly said in a regrettable tone of voice, never doubting their statement will be considered anything but acceptable.
This is what has to stop--the complacency that ensues when someone doesn't want to insult a friend, relative, or neighbor. If everyone would just speak up, and be willing to lose that friendship--then, just maybe, the *bad owners* would have to think twice BEFORE EVEN getting that disposable dog.
Let's face it--there aren't many repercussions from the law. But, there aren't many repercussions from friends and relatives, either (which IMO, are far better weapons---ones that can be used, tout de suite.

"low level crime"
OMGawd !!! Jeffrey Dahmer anyone remember ??? How he started ?? with animals.
Ted Bundy even admitted torture against animals.
Most serial killers, rapists, even the habitual Domestic Violence crimes commiters are found to have commited serious animal crimes.
How are these people getting the dogs ??
Well my first guess is Wal-Mart parking lot !!
and other stores as well, The Parking lot Freebies are the ones who have NO value and who are most often fed to the Pit Bull's in training for confidence boosters. They are the ones offered as sacrifices, They are the ones taken home to torture so that idiot can "get off" on it. animal abusers have no place in our society and should be "taken care of" on the spot in my OP.
would be nice if the old eye for eye would come back to society wouldnt' it ???
