I would have to agree with Brittany on this one.Bottom line - A GSD of proper breeding and socialization would not go ballistic when fireworks start popping.True many dogs do, but only those who have no nerves and confidence. The proper reaction to fireworks should be exactly the same as a gunshot, the dog should be alerted by the sound, but not scared.

I realize this thread is old but wanted to reply anyway .I personally love fireworks but only the large kind that are set up for huge shows for the public . I think fireworks should only be allowed on 4th of July and New Years. I have 3 dogs that attack fireworks they are not afraid of fireworks at all but we have to contain those three dogs or they will get their mouths hurt by going after fireworks again & again. We found that out when the kids were younger and trying to pop firecrackers in the yard . The other dogs i own could care less about firework noise they are more or less indifferent to it , not afraid or jumpy over the loud noise, bad weather , guns etc ..I live close to where a major public fire works display is put on 2 times a year , also my dogs go to parades with police cars /firetrucks blarring 2 a year so perhaps to them they are conditioned to handle the loud sounds but i feel its their background lineage . I think with some dogs being scared of loud sounds can be temperament such as weak nerve , some it can be how they were introduced to loud noise like say when a young pup or can be learned from young age by owner fussing/petting pup to much rewarding a behavbior or encouraging pup to be afraid . I think anyone with a dog that is frieghtened by fireworks ,gun shots ,lightening or loud noise's should put the dog inside in a crate until all the racket is over .We all should know what our dogs likes and dislikes are and as owners we are suppose to keep them safe .

this is just another case were we cant blame society but we can blame people and loud noises suck i dont like them nobody does but if you were walking down the street with this dog and a car backfired and you didnt have him her on leash and it ran in the street and got hit does that mean we should ban cars also. this is typical socialogical B/S that consistantly goes on you know how we can eliminate 95% of our problems license the owners not the dogs.... to operate a dog you must recive a license in proper etiquette of owning and handling this vehicle to proper nutrition to proper traing of one we are always at fault never the dog..... if the dog was contained properly he wouldnt of been in the street getting hurt.. If a dog bites someone case in fact we let them people get people bit dogs dont just bite people,if the dog pooped in the house we failed and missed the signs not the dog these dogs are only as good as there owners period... Okay. First off, fireworks are illegal in most states, unless you have a permit to use them from your local government. Most who do use them do not have said permit. Second, I understand the facination with them. I like it when I am doing it, but I don't like it when the other guy is doing it. I think it is because I trust myself and not the "other guy". Sort of like being the driver of a car or the passenger of a car. It's more scary if you are the passenger and not in control. Anyway. I am out in the "boondocks" and it is not an issue with me, however, being a retired cop from a big city, I can say that the use of fireworks by the average "city hick" is way overboard. I can say hick because I are one :) I have seen many, many injuries to children and drunk adults. Seems that fireworks and beer go hand in hand most times. DesertRangers has a good point about dog owners keeping their dogs safe, especially on those "days" when fireworks is expected. I do not think the point about only breeding dogs "with nerve" is valid, as there are many dogs out there that were obtained from shelters and the like, and also, there are many people who want a "rug that licks" type of dog, and not one with nerve. Much like enjoying fireworks, who are we to say that they should not have those kinds of pets. I must also mention that fireworks bother other types of pets such as parrots, cats, etc., and they bother most elderly people who may have bad hearts. I enjoy a fireworks display as much as the next guy but, all in all, their "cons" far outweigh their "pros". P. S. they do not bother my dogs in the least, unless they are fired at them (bottle rockets). The guy next door to me is always target practicing with his guns (shotguns, rifles and pistols) and they hardly notice it. He is only about fifty yards away from my kennels. I guess it is like drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes. I just don't get it. Maybe we should have been more careful with the people we bred so that we do not need crutches for our nerves, such as alcohol and cigarettes :) Hey, people who get "titled", to be allowed to breed. Now there's an idea :)
