The greatest improvement we could offer our intelligent GSD breed is to STOP idiots from owning one. Prospective owners should require an IQ of 125 or above.

I echo Carole's sentiments, a really good decision, for you, your dog and the breed in general. Yes it is shocking to see what some breeders get up to, but at least you've done the right thing and chosen not to join them.
Looking at the last post perhaps it's best you didn't get a 'response' from Videx LOL.

I didn't take kindly to being shouted at by an old sot, when I rang you with my concerns when the pup was 8 months old and I was extremely polite when I rang, more than can be said about you. So do forgive me for questioning Dale M about the integrity of your character.
Personally I don't give a rat's arse if you have had 135 yrs of vast experience in all aspects of the GSD, or an IQ level that absorbs information like a sponge and analyses it like a computer. Is that meant to impress people perchance? It certainly doesn't make you a more likable person. I have heard you called far stronger words than idiot, prat, garbage blah blah. It is correct what people say about you and the reason why you won't face up to the accusations from members of this forum.
'Empty vessels make most noise', is that so Mr Payne? How hypocritical.

Hell, I am well qualified then to own one, as I have a Mensa IQ of 154 but I don't see the need to brag about it.
Only one idiot on this topic Mr Payne and that's you!
Tschüss
MY FINAL COMMENT

Sorry to hear you have such problems with your dog.
I havea dog with a score of 48, and my breeder was entirely supportive, and helped with loads of advice, and we have become friends, and still are 8 years later. my girl by the way is doing just great and swims regularly and is on mild medication. They were hugely disappointed that she had HD, but when I had spoken to them before deciding upon them as breeders, we discussed HD in some depth, and they were careful to make sure I understood that the best of scores can produce dysplastic pups. I was just unlucky, one of her litter sisters had a fantastic score, and it could have been her that I chose. I didn't but certainly have no regrets over my puppy pick, as she is the most fantastic dog. There were good scores right back in the lines too.
It's bad enough when these health problems arise, as we obviously care deeply and worry about our dog's well being, but how the breeder supports the owner (and the dog they produced) is so fundamental to being a *good* breeder rather than just *somewone who breeds dogs*.
Was the owner of the bitch any more supportive?

I didn't bother getting my dog hip scored, I was told it would be a waste of money as her hip x-rays showed at only 8 months how severe the HD was and even certainly an 'idiot with an IQ of lower than 125' would be able to see it and it would be prudent for me to save my money towards treatment she would need in the future.
Like you I have a fantastic dog, super intelligent with a super temperament and I wouldn't swap her for the world, I just find it heart- breaking each time something else is diagnosed wrong with her and she still soldiers on.
To Videx aka Mr Payne
Please don't be so rude as to send me a PM demanding things, then block me from replying. Very immature of you.
I told you I was not hiding behind an identity, so well done for your search on Google, but are you any the wiser as you more than likely wouldn't remember me from nearly 8 years ago? Actually, don't bother to answer that, as I am done with you and accordingly have blocked you too. I don't want to relive the heartbreak I have been through for nearly 8 years - so please respect that and sod off. Idiot!

I'm so glad you got the genuine support of the other people involved in the breeding of your girl. It is heartbreaking when they have more than one health issue to cope wiht, my first ever GSD was like that. She sounds as though she has the right owner, and I have found that this adversity makes the bond between you and your dog incredibly strong. I wish you and your girl the best in all that you do.
What is ironic is that many breeders actually don't know what it is like to have and love a dog with these difficulties, because they (especially commercial breeders) do not keep them if they find any kind of a disorder, but withdraw them from their programme (if they are ethical) and then find them 'pet' homes.
BTW, Videx sending PMs and then blocking people from replying is his standard modus operandi. I found the best solution when he did it to me was a) advise him that I would post his PMs to me on the forum for everyone to see, and b) I actually replied to something he sent on the board after he blocked me. That is also what I will do in the future if he PM's me again, simply post it on the forum.

Thanks Abby, that is appreciated and it does make for a stronger bonding.

Or the other altenative option, put them to sleep, as the cost of medication would be high, although a dog could lead a perfectly normal-ish life, even though on expensive meds.

I am hoping he respects my last comment to sod off. I have no wish to discuss anything with such an obnoxious person. I have avoided posting or joining in anywhere for nearly 8 years where he has had an input, so I didn't realise that was his MO. I bet he got bullied a lot as a child.
Shame I wasted my time typing out a reply to him to find he had blocked any reply to him. His super sleuthing has found out one of my lesser email addresses too, one I rarely use, so will be interesting to see what I receive in there, an IQ of 125 wouldn't be needed if anything suspicious starts to happens in it
