Shelley Strohl

Every puppy is a gamble. Personally, I think there is no 8 week old puppy in the world worth more than about $2800. As they get older and you can tell more about them (ears up, both testicles descended, correct structure, prelimenary hip x-rays, good temperament) they tend to get more expensive, (FAST sometimes!) especially if they have received good foundation training as they have matured, show a high level of ability in the work, and/or if they are doing well in the show ring... OR (!) if the owner/breeder is reluctant to sell their little "star." I expect $1200-1800. for my carefully-bred, (both parents titled, Kkl.1, low ZB factor) well-taken-care-of, tattooed puppies, but I will occasionally accept a lot less if the pup is going to a competition home, especially if the litter is large. Better the puppies go to good homes while they are babies than to hang onto them, holding out for more money, and not be able to give each one the time and attention they need because you have too many dogs. Yes, I have sold young pups (under 12 weeks) for more, usually show pups from V-A x High V-rated (BSZS) parents, once for as much as $3800., but only because I didn't want to sell the puppy in the first place. It took the buyer a lot of time and persuasion to convince me to let that drop-dead gorgeous little guy prance away on someone else's leash. I cried all the way back from the show, and was quite upset later on, when they didn't do anything with him competition-wise. At least he got a good, loving home.
