We have some pretty interesting laws in my county regarding dogs.  One is a leash law that states dogs must be under owner control at all times whether voice or leash and if the dog is not controllable under voice, very strict fines and a one oops rule so the owner best trust the dog to listen.

Another is the tether law, it is against the law to tether a dog on a line shorter than 12' and the owner must have eyes on the dog, no dog is unsupervised while on tether or in a fenced yard.  The dog can not be tethered outside longer than an hour.  Too many people leave to run errands or whatever and leave there dogs outside unsupervised (not that any of you do here).

No dog is allowed to bark longer than 5 minutes when a stranger enters the yard or nuisance bark longer than 5 minutes in an hour period.

Also dogs are absolutely not allowed to ride in the bed of pickup trucks unless there is a cap on the truck or some form of tether system to keep the dog safely from jumping out and some form of comfortable matting on the floor of the truck bed.  If the ambient temp is over 80 degrees, the dog is not allowed out in the yard for an extended period of time, left in the vehicle, or in the capped bed of a truck AT ALL
.

Not that these laws are enforced all the time, believe me, but the hope is to get people to wake up to the responsiblities of dog ownership.  Like my husband said, useless attempt, you can't legislate intelligence or good conscience.

Yikes; I'm even more irresponsible than I thought!

So I wonder if the tether used in the back of the truck can be shorter than 12 feet? LOL  Not poking at you MH, but the laws some places implement.  Put a dog with a 12 foot tether in a truck and the poor dog is screwed if it does jump/fall out.

And who monitors their dogs 100% when they are outside in a yard or on a tether?  Sounds like where you live they have basically outlawed dogs being outside except for a brief potty break.

I wonder what they would do if they showed up at the average dog training club, where people had dogs in crates all day, waiting their turn to go work.

My sister got harassed by a cop once because her dog was loose in the cab of her truck.  He tried to tell her there were laws about dogs being loose in a truck, they had to be tethered.  She tried to explain the law meant in the BED of the truck, not the CAB.  He finally backed down, I think because she was polite but adament about the law, and she went home and printed out a copy of it to carry in the vehicle for future use.

Sometimes I wonder if these people just don't have anything better to do?

I mentioned to my breeder that I tethered my puppy to a tree while I did my workouts very close to him and kept an eye on him. She told my it was very dangerous to tether my dog even while I was watching him and told me that his legs could get caught up and have to be amputated. I just had to laugh.  And to think I bought a dog from her.

Does anyone here find it dangerous to tether your dog while you keep an eye on it 100%?

MVF, not everyone is as fortune as you are to be able to let your dogs run freely as you say. Obviously you wouldn't do that in a neighborhood, or busy street....

Unless you tell me you run 10 miles a day with each of your dogs at a nice clip, I say: place your poor prisoners before they die.

They are not hamsters.>>>

Ok since its their earth, lets cut them all loose and let them run wild in packs.....That would really be the responsible thing to do.....

Exactly why I moved to the countryside. Barely any neighbors. Complete acreage is fenced in. Gated entry.

1.3 fenced-in acres here.  Recently had to install 45-degree barb arms and ran three courses of coated wire over the 4' chain-link portion in the front of the property to keep my male contained - he figured out he could just jump at the top rail and bounce over and escape, so had to put a stop to that toot sweet!

Funny how the cheap welded wire stuff that runs along 2/3 of the property line actually works best to keep him contained; it apparently feels too flimsy to him to test.

 "Toot sweet"........tout de suite........fantastic expression!

Agreed; the sturdy stuff seems like a jungle gym or something to be jumped. That flimsy crap doesn't get tested if it can't be cleared in one fell swoop.

malndobe they want to make that a law in some states. Well, basically they want to make it illegal to have a dog in the vehicle with you period is what they said on the news here a few days ago. I was just like, are you kidding me?  How do you get your dog to the vet, or what if your dog has something happen to it, and it needs to go to the vet immediately. ........... They were talking about it on the news here in middle TN.....and at the end of that part they say that it's just too dangerous, having a dog in the vehicle and that a few days before that a woman was killed in an accident because her CAT caused her to wreck......it wasn't a dog, it was a cat........but they want to make it where it's illegal to have a dog in the vehicle because of that.  That was ridiculous, and honestly, I don't hear of many wrecks and deaths due to animals in a vehicle.  Texting or talking on the phone, yes.....but a dog who is just sitting in the back seat of a vehicle.
