@VKGSDs - i think, your gsd is just perfect. He has good drive and especially the defense drive that i am looking for too.. If there is a litter of west german show line whose parents are with VA ranks.. How can we recognise the puppy with the perfect drive ? Any way to know the drive just by meeting the puppy ?

@kenkessler550f - you say that There are many European Show line dogs who are as tough, yet as stable as you may want. Whats your take on west german show line ? Whats about their drive to work(tracking,protection/guarding and patrolling) and working ability of west german show line gsd ?

Look at videos of the Sieger shows at the bite work its awfull. You people are funny and entertaining to say the least....20 years ago maybe there where some show dogs that where for real and could work but not any more...

Cop Dog, i was just as entertained and thought the video of the cop dog running with the perp was funny.   We are talking GSD's and it is one glass house.

I've seen a video of a working line police dog pull a jacket off a suspect and just stand there thrashing the jacket while the suspect got up and pulled out a weapon.  That's not to say I think showlines are good police dogs, but a shitty dog is a shitty dog regardless of lines.

Manjeet, personally when I look for a showline I don't really care about VA rankings or any of that, I look at the pedigree, look at how the parents of the dog work.  To be honest I could count on one hand the number of showline dogs I'd take a second look at today.  I can't think of a VA dog in the USA or Germany that I'm interested in as far as drive/work.  Pretty much all of the "courage" tests are embarassing for me to watch.  I picked out my own dog based on his mother.   I used to train with her on a weekly basis and liked what I saw.  In many ways I just got lucky, as I originally inteded to get a dog for agility competition and did not try Schutzhund and other protection sports until well after I'd purchased the dog.

All dogs like humans are different. Some dogs are protective, some are not. Some aggressive some are not.The showline and the working line are from the same dog and so old traits are there in both. In the showline the emphasis is on shows..... so there are those in the show line who may not have great guarding and protective qualities. But the whole subject is very subjective if you understand what I mean.

What exactly are you expecting from the dog? Do you plan to train or do schutzhund? What are you wanting protection for/from? Just reassurance that you will get warning of an intruder or something more? How much time do you have to invest in training this dog? Is this dog also to be a pet?........ It may be more about what you do with whatever dog you choose than assuming you will get what you want the day you buy it. All dogs have different temperaments, drives and personalities and whilst good breeding will set you up well in choosing, you still have to build a bond with the dog irrespective of what you see as their primary purpose in your life. Hence I think you may run the risk of being disappointed or worse if you think it all depends on choosing the right 'product' so to speak.

@sugarplum The dog would be pet and live in the family with kids and all . And I do my own works with my gsd.. That includes from protection, tracking to jogging. Can i go for show line gsd too ? Its an old post. I have booked a working line(czech) gsd for me and will be getting within a month.
