I like the idea of a paintball gun, but I highly doubt it would stop the dogs. I have nothing against the breed, but I do think they are timebombs. Some of them never go off, and they are great dogs, but man... in downtown Omaha a couple years back, there was a mother and her kid (like 2-3 y/o) walking, and a pit ran out of the house and ripped the poor girls face off. The mother was wounded, as were some other passers-by, and I believe they had to kick the dog repeatedly in the head to get it to let go finally. Needless to say, there are now some fancy little bully breed laws that are ineffect, even though I rarely see pits wearing muzzles, and I highly doubt these people are actually CGC titling their dogs (the requirement to let your dog go around without a muzzle).
Frankly if any of those dogs went after any of my animals, all hell would break loose for the dogs and the owners.

Here in MI if a dog comes after us onto our property to do damage, I believe we can shoot. But, if we are not on our property we can only shoot a dog if it bites us first.
Then if they can't tell you the police that is. Then go to your online law site for your county or go to a lawyer's office, the attorney will have books on what exactly you can and can not do about it.
I have a friend here, with same situation, the dog is aggressive, same breed, (I'm not againist pits)
but no one will do anything, just dog at large citation.
If anything if you have the police come out and the neighbors dogs are not on their property wandering around and they admit they are their dogs the police are suppose to issue a dog at large citation. A misdemor(sp) here in MI.
I hope you get this resolved. They are totally in the wrong and need to get their act together.
I don't blame you, this would of given me a heart attack!!!!

But, it will work on the neighbors. I would resort to this if they try to physically attack you. Be sure to check with police in if you can use this if the ppl, come to your house again.
Unfortunely, you have to do what you think you should by the law. And unfortunely, you have to use brute force againist the dogs.
And yes, when dogs hunt in packs, they will turn on you. Living in the country and having ppl, drop off several dogs at a time, they do hunt and kill in packs. They are not choosy what they kill.
I hope nothing serious comes of this and the police department takes a serious action againist these owners. good luck.

I say: you cannot seriously believe this. Seriously? "Timebombs?" Did you also hear the one about the Doberman skull not being big enough for their brain, thereby causing sudden aggression and craziness around 4 years old?
FWIW, to the rest of you thinking people out there, the dogs you are all describing and even posting pictures of do not look to me like American Pit Bull Terriers, but rather poorly bred molosser crosses. I would shoot them if they were messing with my animals more than once. Once can happen to anyone- your dog gets loose, sh!+ happens. More than once, fix the problem yourself, and make it disappear. JMO.

And I think they are cute. I've got friends with pits and I love them to death. But they are one of those few people who actually took the time to socialize and train their dogs. Those pits are actually very well mannered.
Perhaps I should've been more specific - those dogs that are running loose, the ones who are terrorizing livestock, the ones with careless owners - those dogs are timebombs. The dogs the OP was talking about - timebomb. It's only a matter of time before something is attacked by them.
And I am thinking, thanks. ;)
No dog is bred to kill. I will stand firmly by that. Every dog out there has potential when it's born, and when it falls into the wrong hands, then who knows what will happen to it.
And personally, I think AC should do more about the little anklebiters that terrorize the world. But most of them are too small to do more damage than a couple puncture wounds, so they are fine. But I don't want to get off topic...

HERE IS A LINK TO SHOW WHAT A LADY IN HOUSTON DID TO RID HER PROPERTY
Since the incidents here in TEXAS have escolated, the Animal Control, told me last Weds , and this lady is the head supervisor of the Gal CO Health District AC , told me to get the dog by a rope and bring it in my vehicle to Animal Control taking pics of where I found him on sons property..So I or WE have to do the deed of a dog who bites???????
So here is a link for laughs about a lady in HOuston WHO had Possum problems and animal control nor Houston would get anything done.....this is FUNNY
MM if we get no results I guess we will load all loose dogs in the neighborhood who end up on my sons yard, in truck and open the door of the GAL CO NC BUILDING and let them in ,,,,shut door and leave whistling DIXIE>>>>>

I am glad nobody was hurt this time. it is people like that give pits/bully breeds a bad name. They should not be owning ANY DOG. Please be careful and do whatever it is to protect you and your family and animals. The owners of these dogs sound like real jerks. They should have apologizing and not swearing. I hope you do not any problems with the owners if you shoot the dogs. I hate irresponsible people. I wish the best of luck with this dangerous situation.
Warm Regards,
Michele
