Finding a good tough dog isn't as hard as finding a handler who can handle them responsibly. JMO

AMEN  - this deserves repeating.
The dilemma of the breeder who has a dog that can work well.  We do more in dog handling sessions even with those who are coming to buy family protection dogs, now our biggest client.  I enjoy getting these people a real understanding the dog having territorial defense and why it will guard your house.  Now, let's learn to work this!  Stay is a command, not a question.

And then those TOUGH guys. . . with the current "state of the union" on crime, property protection dogs have to be tough and very real and yes, have  insurance.

I monitor two dogs in a 5000sqft  warehouse just for this.  We once found doors damaged due to attempted entry, my first question to our PD,  "shall I get you a copy of the rabies certificate so we can facilitate this process when it does happen?"

Speaking of tough dogs, anyone here remember Joe Kuhn?

Oh, what a world!

I never met Joe, but the first person to ever work my male knew him well and swore by his dogs. This guy was the director of K9 training for a local county.

There are plenty of tough gsd out there and their not hard to find the hard part is training.  If you can do the rite things in training you will have a dog that willl protect your family.  All you saw out of that hound was territorial defense he thought he was takeing over your yard and you was trying to stop him.  Most gsd will defend there property no matter what line we are talking about.  I understand what you mean when asking if are sport dogs are up to real life protection work myself i dont know.  What do you think about the question that some of are sport training my have a negative affect on are dogs in real life protection work?  I have woundered this for a while we could be confuseing some of them and reshapeing behaviors that they need in real life protection work.

YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU WILL, BUT A LITTLE SISSY FU-FU DOG IS NOT WHAT YOU WANT WATCHING OVER YOUR FAMILY WHEN YOUR GONE.WHEN SOMETHING BAD ARISES YOU NEED A DOG FULL OF GRIT NOT SH_T.

Kelevra, what are you talking about?

Just for the sake of argument, I had a Chihuahua who would and did defend me. Did he stop the guy dead in his tracks? No, but he caused a whole bunch of annoying punctures before I tossed him aside fearing for his safety. He had zero fear for his own safety.

This is not what Tenmon was addressing. He was specifically addressing GSDs and why it seems we see these qualities in other breeds not known for it and less often in our breed who is supposed to be known for it.

mamm with all do respect your going to get this type of behavior out of every breed out there. do to the simple fact every body wants to produce their own line. and dont care what it takesto do so. PEDDLING PUPS, LACK OF CULLING AND OVER LOOKING THINGS THAT SHOULDN'T BE OVER LOOKED.theres no other breed in the world that has taken more slaps in the face then the apbt and the bad apples make it hard on everyone are beloved breed is being baned in every other state but we as dogmen and dogwomen keep trudging. but the title says where have all the good, tough dogs gone .NOT where have all the good, tough gsds gone and thats what i thought we were talking about .finding some GOOD,TOUGH AND INTELLIGENT DOGS. sorry if upset you ken

Ken, I am not upset; I just had no idea what you were talking about. What do Pit Bulls or "fu fu" dogs have to do with Tenmon's question? Tenmon was specifically talking about GSDs in his first post, the way I read it.

by KELEVRA KENNELS on 10 December 2010 - 03:12

he also spoke about a bloodhound and a pitbull, thats the part that stood out for me. ive been a fancier of the pitbull since i first laid eyes on one let alone being the toughest dog breed in the world.i must be Irish
