Leif,
Do the dogs you train eventually work with out the ecollar on?

Essentially it's like using any other training tool, through proper application, you wean them off. Whether you use food, toys, choke collars, pinch collars, a leash or even just praise, there will come a time where it is not allowed (or just not available).

Phil,
I just hope the training isn't like Shit means Shit, the collars never come off.

Oh hell no, I said if used "properly". That idea was pirated by a guy who did better marketing than his mentor (who gets no credit). Works for people with absolutely NO feel (or concern) for what they are doing.

I have seen collars used in what I felt was a much more humane manner than some of the old Koehler methods. And by trainers who compete on a very high level.
Also witnessed a dog get absolutely burned into the ground because she was not doing a recall properly. I didn't think the guy was ever going to let up on her. As novice as I am to training, I recognized that this cannot be correct. To me, this is no different than those who, literally, beat the crap out of their dogs for mistakes.
I am with those who say it is just another tool if used correctly.

Well, of course we all know there are all variety of training methods. i only havemy personal experience to rely on. Of the 7 GSDs I currently live with, 2 I raised from puppies, both have perfect recall, one had e-collar taining, one didn't. 2 I imported from Holland as young adults, one has had e collar training in his repertoire, he has perfect recall, the other had prong/long line training, she has imperfect recall currently. 2 are rescues and they always recall, 1 has had basic petSmart type obedience 6 yrs ago before I got her and she has issues, but recall is not one of them, the other washed out of an SAR program a number of years ago , so uncertain of the methods used. The 7th is Hazel, who not only has perfect recall, but is mostly perfect in all ways.
So, from this small study group I might deduce,if I were a reseacher, especially if I had a Grant and was paid to deduce such .... that one can get good recall result from the use of an e-collar, that one's rescues are appreciative and will always recall, that one in the group will (damn it) always be perfect and then there will be that one who thinks outside of the box........
