My last GSD, Bruno, ate a tennis ball...twice. The first time I found out he had eaten it by accident. He got into a big bag of cat food and ate well over a gallon of food. I wasconcerned about bloat so took him to the ER. The x-ray showed a foreign object which turned out to be a tennis ball. I was so glad he got into the cat food otherwise he probably would've died. The tennis ball was surgically removed and cost $1200- this was10 years ago. Needless to say all tennis balls were removed from our house and property and we resorted to playing "hoses" which worked better anyway for tugging and so forth. The second time it happened I was away and the pet sitter, who I distinctly warned to NOT leave any tennis balls around, left one out after playing with his dog...and Bruno ate it. Once again Bruno had to have the tennis ball surgically removed...another $1200. THe vet said if it happened again he probably would not survived the surgery. It never happened again and the old boy lived to be 14 years old.
Both of our present dogs ate a cooked chicken carcass, at different times. They both managed to pull open the built in trash drawer in our kitchen. Fortunately they both passed everything with no problems. Now the carcasses go straight into the outdoor trash can, whihc is kept in an enclosed area.
My sister's Border Collie ate one of Bruno's hoses, but fortunately she passed it. Never a dull moment with dogs...
Sometimes things happen that we don't expect. I had no idea that Bruno would actually eat a tennis ball- never occured to me. I also didn't know my sister's Border Collie was into eating hoses and niether did my sister because she never ate anything else. Of course, the hoses are put away when she comes over now. Sometimes stuff just happens! BTW, I would do anything for my dogs.
I sure hope your dogs will be ok. These situations are so nerve wracking, not to mention expensive!

My first shepherd ate a bunch of leashes. He even ate the attached tab collar and all that was left was the hardware.
I was using blood sausage as a training treat and it is messy stuff and in effect, I "basted" the leash with super tasty blood sausage.
At first I thought the missing leashes were lost in the car, had fallen behind a seat or had left them at the training field or something.
I pulled my car apart and thoroughly cleaned it. Then I found some of the hardware stuck behind one of the seats. Then I knew.
I took him to the vet and had him xrayed. It was really shocking to see the metal findings from the leashes in his stomach. It had been a few days and he had been eating and pooping normally, somehow, My vet said that we should give him a few days to see if he would pass it naturally. He advised me to walk him a lot. It seemed to be working.
We were at the training field practicing retrieves over the jump. Suddenly, he stopped, ran to the side of the field and passed a whole bunch of leather and some metal parts.
I took him back to the vet and confirmed by xray that it was all gone.
