Mindhunt

by Mindhunt on 25 February 2010 - 20:02

Moons, I thought you might like this one, a back yard fenced in isn't safe from determined people LOL.
I had a neighbor (was actually in a psychiatric facility for murder) who took an instant dislike to my husband and called him a Nazi (blond hair, blue eyes, Dutch, I am the stereotypic German) and called my dogs Jew killers (she is Jewish). We put up an 8 foot fence between her yard and ours.  Needless to say, she decided to call our Ronin over, she is calling him sweetly by name once so he obliges and jumps the fence, I was a few feet away never believing he would do something so goofy (one of those "uh oh" moments that should have gone on the other thread LOL) I yelled "NO" but not quick enough.  I called him back and he hopped over the fence like nothing, all happened in the matter of a heart beat.  He was so proud of himself.  Other neighbor happened to catch the whole thing on video (thank goodness he was showing his new video camera and videoing Ronin).  Needless to say, police showed up and she accused my "Nazi" dog of jumping the fence to attact her,  and that we trained them to "attack Jews like the evil Nazi he [my husband] is".  She showed her bloody arms and chest.  Our neighbor showed the video that caught her calling the dog over and the split second Ronin was actually over in her yard.  No sounds of attack.  Later we found out she had taken a meat fork to her arm and chest, she really did a number on herself.

Mindhunt,
I would be very very concerned if I had a neighbor like that living next to me. Did this happen outside of Baltimore?  Just wondering...  I hope someone did  a TDO, temporary detention order or an ECO Emergency custody order on her and had her committed immediately.  Pretty impressive that your dog could jump and 8' fence, but that would concern me as well.  I have 6' fences around my yard and my kennels.  I know my dog has the ability to jump them, but I have never encouraged it or taught it.  It is a pain in the but when I track someone that has gone over a 6' fence.  I have to deliberate putting the dog over by lifting him, having him jump, going around or just knocking a hole in the fence.  I really don't want to teach my dog to jump fences like that for several reasons.

Well, at least you live in Fla now and don't have that wacko as a neighbor.

Lav-K9,
I am not sure how effective the "Mace" brand stuff is on a dog.  It may irritate the skin, mouth and nasal passages, but I would question the effectiveness on the eyes.  Dogs have very alkaline tears and most OC products and gasses like CN or CS don't affect dogs like they do people.  I have never sprayed a dog with OC spay, lots of people but never a dog.  I think the surprise of the spray may give enough of a reaction to stop most dogs.  We have sprayed dogs with fire extinguishers on search warrants that were guarding dope dealers houses.  That works well (until it runs out) and does not do any damage to the dog. I'd be curious to hear from anyone that has used these products in the past.  I can tell you that a strong flashlight has worked well on charging pit mixes at 2AM.  The bright light in the eyes has stopped more than one dog.

My rule of thumb is you don't have to be able to run faster that the dog, just faster than your partner.  This is also my rule rule when scuba diving, I don't have to out swim a shark, just my dive buddy.

Jim...remind me to never go scuba diving with you.lol  I know when I was at the animal sanctuary and I was playing with the lions or mtn lions...and the tigers as well....we had a solution of some kind of citronella spray that if the cats got a bit frisky and were playing with us too hard that we would spray them with that. That is a cat though....they didn't like the water.I don't know if it would have an affect on the dogs. There is also the thought of vinegar I know that burns the eyes!!
I will be out of here soon....SO I am hoping that I don't need it where I go next.

Mindhunt

This is back in Michigan and has been going on for years.  Her husband died and I believe he was the one who kept her on planet earth or there abouts.  Ever since he passed, she has gone off the deep end.  She has lots of money and a dang good attorney. She has taken most of the neighbors to court over stupid stuff but you know attorneys and court systems, you get as much justice as you can afford.  She has been diagnosed with terminal cancer so I think she is too busy to bug all the neighbors right now.  She has become a frequent flyer of the local township police and they finally realize she is whacko.  As for Ronin, I was pretty shocked he did it but not surprised.  He is utterly fearless (except thunderstorms but we have come a long way).  FAST and AGILE doesn't begin to cover him.  He jumped over the roof of our H2 for giggles, climbs ladders, opens refridgerators and cupboards for goodies, can trace a mouse fart on a windy day back to the offending mouse, get out of any crate, and the list could go on forever.  He was training for Search and Rescue until I blew my knees out, and it was heartbreaking since he was incredible and so happy and willing to work.  Now I am constantly trying to find ways to keep him and the others working and entertained.  Nothing worse than a bored working dog.  He is also great at detecting infections, cancer, low blood sugar, oncoming storms to within 10 minutes (time him from his first "storm" chirp to the arrival, he has different chirps for different things), impending heart attacks, migraines, and seizures, hasn't been wrong yet (just took us almost forever to figure out what each different noise and behavior meant).  He is truly a freak of nature. It has been an interesting 6 years with him and to think he was a rescue from an abusive home.
