LAVK-9

Keith- the physical corrections aren't brutal ones!! lol I have trained MANY scared pups with the collar and in the end....and quite quickly in the begining have had them happy and up beat. I do agree with YR that he does need to bond with the dog first. That is a big thing but it can be done and for someone to just out right say it can't isn't right.Maybe that person can't train on and never has but just because they haven't done it doesn't mean that someone else hasn't. It's like me saying that someone can't stand on their head cause I can't and I have never seen it done.JMPO

I think that Capt. is looking to learn and will do ok.
Be helpful and informative.

going to take him to town for a ride and to a nice place to run and me and him to get some quailty time .

by beetree on 05 February 2010 - 19:02

Sounds like a plan and a great time for you both.  And it is a relief to know the pup isn't tied to a tree in the backyard... .  Of course now I must ask if you have any pictures of the pup, just because this board likes pictures of pups!

You ended up getting some good advise, and like 2Moons says, it sounds like you want to learn and will do what is best for you, your GF, the kids, and especially the dog. Have fun training your pup.

Hi captain, just wanted to say welcome to the board!

I loved YR's advice about  bonding with your pup.  Alot of good advice from 4pack too.
Glad to hear you are taking him to town, my guys absolutely love their car rides. I take turns taking them to work with me.  Sometimes it's irritating because everyone wants to tell them what to do, but I bite their heads off, and it's all good.

You picked the best breed there is!  Have fun!

Why do you think it is so very important to teach him "German" commands? Do you think dogs can tell a difference between English, Chinese, German and say, Spanish?

And secondly, why do you think the dog is afraid of you?

by captain32 on 06 February 2010 - 18:02

i want to teach him german, because the dogs are so smart i think it cool and a challenge for me and we both can learn together.why he is afraid of me if inew ,when i said that it was ,that was just a opinion that really im not sure of.if it was confusion or timid.it was in the heir command ,more i think it was a confusion .i think to much in one time training. we had a good day yesterday.hand feed him and went to the park and petco.for treats i havent been rewarding him with treats just praise .someone suggested i need a kennal,i let him free in a big back yard my hours for work are long,i leave the house at 4;30 and get home at 6;00 so a kennal would be cruel in my situation.im building a coal fired power plant in texarkana arkansas,i commute 110 miles one way frrom ne texas. pipefitter?what do yall use in your trucks or cars ,the dog hair sheds bad?HE SHOWS NO FEAR OF NOTHING VERY ALEART AND COFADENT.the only time was in traing no dont use the traing chain wrong or aggresive.sorry for spelling ,not the best.also i didnt want to post this but my girlfriend has allergys and i dont let him in the house ,i no yall are fixen to dog me out but im in need of help.just want to be honest.he dont get to hang with the pack like alot of people have suggested.

Captain, May I ask who is with your dog during your long working day, as presumably your girlfriend is unable to?  Are you able to spend individual time once you are home with your dog on a daily basis?

I understand that your girlfriend has allergies, what about the 'house-dog' you mentioned?

Hope you don't mind my asking?

Regards,
Vixen

Captain, many on here don't keep their dogs in the house so don't feel guilty about anything.  Youpbviously care enough to come on here and want to do right by your pup, so you are not the kind that forgets about them day in a day out in the back yard.  I agree with you.  It is kinder to let the dog have the run of the yard than to put him in a small kennel.  If you have a closed in yard that is fantastic!

I think teaching your dog german commands as opposed to English is a smart idea, than he won't listen to other peoples commands if they try to give them to him in English.

Anyways,  like someone said, check out www.leerburg.com.  They have alot of free good advice, and also sell training DVD's and lots of dog equipment, toys and treats.  It is doggy heaven there.

All the best!
