Most dog trainers know how to handle pit bulls yes and there are a breed of the Pit bull that are actually a few titled in schutzhund, and one I know attacked my german shepherd in Austin Texas many years ago on the field while getting a title and that dog of course was banned from ever coming near a USA field....
James Hefler , for anyone that has records can look up...since someone will of course try to start some trash , I am sure...
Here is just one Tyler paper account and there are many many others....these dogs have some kind of quirk and they snap..As the Rabies Control Officers in any county in our state...They will be glad to fill your bag with many tales.
The people on here who train and raise a pit bull are not the people who obviously have the dogs let loose and never bother to keep dog properly in an area a neighborhood child cannot walk up to or even play with.
These dogs are not bred right...they are bred to fight and by crooks or people of no knowledge of breeding.
..One of the kids killed had played with the pit bull that killed her, many times, according to the parents and the owner of the dog...many tales the same...kids played and the dog nevr did any kind of agggression......Then one day......killed a child or mauled a woman or another person.. I do not have any answers as to why...neither do the Rabies control officers in Texas, either...Smith and Cherokee Counties the two, I speak about since I am familiar of these...

For any who are old enough to remember when Pit Bull attacks were never heard of. These were phenomenal dogs that loved people and under normal socializing were good with other dogs but needed much socializing to be good with other fighting breeds. A Pit that was good with all dogs often turned into a different dog when introduced to a fighting breed dog.
As mentioned, Pits were great with people, great with kids, endured much abuse of children without retaliating because they were tough and could take a childs ignorance.
The problem started when they became Macho dog. When they began to reach popularity the breed suffered just as the GSD did in the early days in this country, the Rott did in the 70's, the Dobie did in the 60's. Every dog that hits our shores and hits the top of the popularity chart bring out all the back yard breeders. With Pitts, many of these back yard breeders were Macho bangers and idiots in general. They wanted tough and mean, so they bred tough and mean. They offered no proper training or socializing and the breed began to suffer immensly. Descent dogs bred to bad dogs produced more bad dogs. Negative traits are easily passed on. Multiply this a thousand or a million times and you end up with many neurotic, overly aggressive and dangerous dogs.
For those that like to take everything out of context, I am NOT saying the breed is bad. I am not saying it is bad or good. It is a breed that has suffered greatly at the hands of empty headed greedy people that breed with no conscience or concern for others. There are many great Pit Bulls around, those that have descent dogs behind them, and have had good training and socializing. There are absalutely terrible Pits around that have terrible dogs behind them or the potential to be terrible dogs. Some may turn out to be good dogs with proper up bringing and proper discipline, some simply should not have been bred.
No breed is good or bad in it's self. Most working dogs that have the potential to do harm have some nut cases and some great dogs. If it were not for stand up GSD breeders, educated and desiring to perpetuate a good dog, our breed would be right there with the the Pits. Because Pits are so popular, and so popular with criminals, they will be bred to guard drug houses, shooting galleries and the like.
Socializing can only do so much. Many animal activist groups such as humane societies say seem to think that upbringing is the only thing that matters. Take any Pit and treat him good and you will have a great dog. I hear many out right lies about this. If you have a nut bag you have a nut bag.
Some have had many bad experiences with Pits and some have had only great experiences with Pits. But when people on here start attacking those that have had bad experiences, send me a pm and I will gladly take you to some places where you will have terrible experiences. Because you have not had them, don't be so narrow minded. The other way around is true as well.
Thanks

Like some of the GSD line breeders?
Case in point...... http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/bulletins_read/329035.html
I'm quite sure that this is not the dog that Max was looking for....

Now as far as the bands on the breed I feel that is rubbish! The OWNERS need to be held accountable for there dogs. Some cities in my state of Ohio have put bands on pits. There was a story on the news about a lady that has had her pit for over 10yrs with no issues and now her city has put a band on the breed and she has to get rid of it or the city will take the dog and put him down! That is just WORNG! Another sine of government taking over our lives! I feel if people wish to have this breed they just need to raise it right with the understanding of the breed as with any dog you get. I have turned down sales of my GSD to people that were not educated about the breed and just liked the looks of them, well go to a backyard breeder for that I will have none of it!
It is a few bad apples that runes it for the rest of the breed as a whole. Just train and raise your dog with love and as much socialization as you can give it and you should have a well rounded pet. Dogs do not lie so if they bite you might want to think of why.
