The battle that seems to be going on here, on several different threads, is that different breeders have different interpretations of the standard, and so do judges at shows. Unfortunately, the views of each particular person dictate what that particular person breeds for, which leads to changes in the breed over time.
If you look at pictures of Shepherds from the early 1900's, or even as late as the 1950's, you'll see a totally different dog (German and USA) from what existed before. In the US lines, I can see a lot of influence from the Covy-Tucker Hills breeding, in the extreme sloping backs and extreme angulation current show dogs display.
Sadly, like all rules, standards have always been open to interpretation, and that has led to a lot of poor breeding. Sad fact of life. Looks will always be important, and health second, and as long as money is at the bottom line when it comes to production, then the breed will suffer.

Smaller than they were in the 90s, so we're heading in the right direction, size wise.
Dingo is always used as an example, he was spectacular in motion.

No they arent mine just pics I have taken at various shows in Germany, I own a Daro son and a Zasko son.
