BRADY BEE

by BRADY BEE on 04 October 2008 - 07:10

If a dog has a food allergy, it usually has a reaction to the food after it has been fed for a long time(months, even years). It is unusual to have a reaction to something new. A true food allergy will involve the immune system whereas a food intolerence will not.  So basically, the dog can have an allergic reaction, even if it has only been fed one type of food for a very long time with no previous problems.

Once you have all your tests back you can do worse than try the Hypo allerginc Kibble without any meat protein at all

you will certainly know if it is going to work withing 5 to 6 days of feeding it

so the time limit is nothing regards trying it

if it does not start to improve in that time then you can say that is not the trouble, but it will do no harm to your dog that is certain, but i am very confident that it will sort your dogs problem out

You do not have to reply to this post as you seem to think i am a bit of a twerp, thats your thoughts but i strongly urge you to at least try it. you have nothing at all to lose by doing so

I will make this my final post on this subject as i am not going to get into a slanging match again

Best

I have twice tried a PM with no response but will try on the post.If you are saying that this dog is also NIBBLING(biting)himself, that tells me that perhaps you are dealing with a food intolorance OR allergy. The good thing is you have changed the protein source, going from the Origen(chicken)to a red meat(Evo) however as far as the food being less rich,NO,Evo is also a rich food with a high protein and FAT content. It is a GREAT food IF the dog can handle it.I too feed one of my GSD's the Innova LB Adult but it is less rich.I will close by telling you from first hand experiance that if it is infact a food intolorance or allergy it usually takes betwwen 8 to 12 weeks to reap the benefits. The loose stools will settle a lot sooner but the scratching and biting can take a little longer.Again ,good luck with your pup.

What are good hypo foods though steve?

Dome i have been real busy so when i saw your pm's i just logged off and forgot to reply once i signed back on. My bad.

So he can most likely have a food intolrance/allergy to chicken so it seems?

Someone needs to school me as to what the term rich means when it comes to dogs and foods and why that is a bad thing and also dome i saw you captilized fat why is that of significance good/bad.

Last night mixed the the foods and gave him some pumpkin/yogurt at the end. Took him out this morning and it was a great form and it was much less than when he was on orijen but then again it could be leftover when i fasted him yesterday and he doesnt have enough food in his stomach idk.  i fed him 1 cup evo 3/4 cup orijen.

Thanks for all your guys help.

Yes,a lot of dogs have a problem with chicken including one of mine.Rich is when the food is to high calorically, higher levels of fat which a lot of dogs dont tolerate well for different reasons. The fat will definetly cause a loose stool effect. Also i would take the OFFENDER food away now and not worry about switching him over slow.If it were me i would find a powder Probiotic instead of the yogurt just for a few days. That will also help with the loose stool.A very affordable ,easy to find one is the Eagle Pack Transition.I bought it a few days ago when i put my 5 year old on the Innova LB Adult and I switched him right over with NO problems at all.All i did was give him the required amount but with BOTH feedings instead of just once a day,in other words it will only last for 3 days instead of 7 cause you are using it also with the second feeding.I would'nt go with a non-meat food just yet ,but that is my opinion.I have another boy that is allergic to chicken and is doing great on a Kangaroo and Oats diet so you see there are MANY choices still.I also want to state that this is in NO WAY ment to insult or offend steve1.As i always say its for the well being of the dog.If you need anything else you are welcome to pm me and you can also call me if you need to.

So looking at foods again (argh) if the EVO doesnt work im highly considering Eagle Pack brand. What could some people tell me about this food?

I had my now 14 Month Old Pup at 9 weeks Old, I fed him on a normal quality puppy kibble, he went on okay but his stools were never really good and firm, Not knowing or even thinking about an allergy i tried another Kibble, but it did not improve now he is about 15 16 weeks old

Then his stools started to really go soft, so i tried him on kibble and a little cooked cxhicken then his stools really went bad in the meant time i took him to the vet and he said treat him for Giadia which we did

Still no differnce and his stools was now becoming brown liquid, and i was washing out his pen four times a day because he was straining himself, it was pitiful to watch, but still he wanted to eat his food

Finally i said to the vet we have to do whatever it takes to find out his problem

He had Every test he could have, bloodtests but they could not say what his problem was tablets were given no good, then i said what about an x-ray and scope i was told it would cost over 700 euros but i said its that or i have him put to sleep i could not stand to see the Pup suffer any more

So it was done an X-Ray and a Scope and a bio-opsis of the small interestine i watched the Vet do it and you could see small red patches on the inside of the intestine

He took samples to send toGent University for testing

afterwards he said in his opinion the Dog had an Allergy to Meat Protein, i said how is that possible, he said how is it possible humans get food allergies Dogs are no different

He then prescibed tablets to get rid of the inflamation in the Intestines and said put him on a Hypo allerngic Dog kibble and gave me a bag, He said they will be certain when the tests are done on the samples They came back a week later it was Meat Prtein that the Dog could not eat

anyway i fed this Hypo food and on the third feed i saw some solid lumps of Poo in the liquid he was passing

one week later his poo was firm normal three tubes of poo came out

I was over the moon, at last we are getting there

He has been perfect ever since now coming up to 14 months old a fit healthy Pup full of life and is going to take his BH test next month at just 15 months old

The Kibble you can only buy from your vet is Royal Canin HYPO ALLERGENIC DR 21

As i said you will know for sure within no more than 4 feeds if it is going to be right the kibble is lighter in coulour than meat kibble as will his stools be but they will firm up within less than a wseek and show signs of doing so in 3 to 4 feeds but give it nothing else not even treats whist you are trying it out

I am confident it will solve your problem

a few weeks ago i tried the PUp on half Hypo and HAlf a meat kibble to see if he had changed being older it did not work after 3 feeds of the half meat kibble his stools sarted to go soft

Back to 100% Hypo diet and two feeds later back to A1 so he must stay on this food other than this he is a normal clever Pup, he loves the meter high jump and the A frame he carries the block  over both like a little Pro

You have tried the Meat Kibbles now try the Non Meat Kibble,  in less than a week you will know if he has a meat allergy or not

Good Luck and i hope it turns out well for the Pup

Best
