"With any breeding titles are not the only measure of what dog shoul or should not be bred.  They are part of the puzzle.  Often when I hear of people that think that schutzhund is a poor test for breeding it makes me wonder if they are really just making an excuse. "

Very well said Jeff.

Again EK I urge you to check the AWD titles.  Just somthing different  and they are new I did one with my guy about 2 weeks ago and it was just that. something different. It is more like the old style schutzhund.  If you like protection more you will enjoy it.

I originally started doing AKC with my first GSD and while I did enjoy most of the people I feel I got a better understanding of my dogs with schutzhund.  Thats where I think max got it right.  The 3 phases really interlace much more than people think they do.  It is a good tool.

But having said that as with any tool  you cannot just use one.  I love my framing nailer but I could not build a house without saws, levels, hammers, chalklines etc.

There are politics in any organazation no matter what.  With any breeding it should be reasearched and really done for the right reasons.  The people who don't do any kind of testing and just breed without knowledge or care for what the offspring will be are more harm for the breed than anything.  Also breeding for extremes no matter what they are is not in the bbest interest of our breed.

Take care   Jeff

I believe that AWDF breed clubs will start offering them.  I did mine at USA trial.

There is an overview and the detailed rules..

I totally agree, but it reinforces the point.  Where schuzhund is a virtual syphony of these multiple characteristics, and how well they work together as an entirity, each phase of the sport does not focus on the core elements that make it all possible.  Two dogs with the same score in one phase can be very different, and offer different "pronounced" points to their offspring.  Like two kids in highschool both having a 3.5 grade point average... one may be better in math, the other in science.  If a breeder wanted to introduce more "hardness" into his lines, that wasn't too "socially aloof", this kind of evaluation would better help identify who might fit the profile.  Not to put down sport, but these evaluations could perhaps be more useful to the breeder in comparison.

As I said, a good temperament test is a good complement, and probably the test that says most of a dogs character, compared to a static test where the dogs perform a routine they done many times over, like a SCH-trial for example. But to test all aspect of a workingdog you couldn´t do in such a temperament test I suppose, for that you need to work the dog to see it´s good and bad points as a worker, to construct a test that says everything about a dog wouldn´t be possible, just think about the logistic in such a project. The goal of a temperament test is to see some usefull traits for a workingdog, as a complement to a sporttitle, and also as a way to test dogs that isn´t highly titled in sports, but may be good candidates for breeding. I guess this is the point this man have, sporttitles says to little about the true character, and it´s usefull to get some info about a breedingdog and it´s littermates in cases when the dogs aren´t highly titled, but still good for breeding.

But all this isn´t any news really.
