My two are definitely inside. I don't know what they, or I would do for that matter, if they were locked outside for the majority of the day or night. They stick to my side like a burr. They get sent outside to potty, and to get some excercise. But they do get adequate walks and play time. If I had another male or female, I may be forced to kennel one, but my male and female get along just perfectly. So they both get to spend as much time with me as they can get. Even if the inside does shorten their lives by a few years, it's quality, not quantity.

My six dogs all stay in the space underneath the stairs.  It's not too big, so it is kinda like a big crate.  They stay there for 12 hrs while I am at work posting on this database.  I let them out when I get home, but not for too long because we live next to the highway and I don't have fencing.  After 5-10 minutes they go back to the "crate"  while I take a shower, eat and watch some tv.  I let them back out for 5-10 minutes before I go to bed and we do it all over the next day.    The cool thing about the "crate" is that I installed a grid floor, so if they go to the bathroom it falls directly into the basement and I don't have to immediately pick up after them.

Mine are primarily outside dogs (covered kennels, vinyl flooring, insulated houses, lots of shade), heat in winter.

I would prefer myself to have them in the house (at least some in the evenings) however, we currently rent and the home owners are sticklers about their rule of no dogs in the house.  It is a small house and unfortunately, my hubby is now becoming set on keeping them outside vs inside even when we are moved into our own house.

I agree that there are many dogs left kenneled or tied in the yard with hardly any interaction from their humans and that is so very wrong.  As someone else mentioned, why have them then?  Most of my daylight hours are spent outside, even more so now that I have become unemployed due to cutbacks at work.  We take them with us most places we go (other than shopping of course).

They are loose in the yard (not in the kennels when we are outside)...the only time they are really kenneled is when we leave and cannot take them with us and in the evenings when we retire to the house.

I truly believe it's a personal thing and your situation or partner may have different feelings also.  If you put the time aside for them (not just half an hour a day), provide adequate housing, etc, there is no reason these dogs cannot live outside and thrive.  As a child, we were never allowed to have a pet in the house anyway so, I guess it's not that big of a deal to me.  However, there's nothing I hate worse than seeing a dog tethered to the same spot day after day (or kenneled) and never let out or off leash and to never see anyone do anything with the dog.  In my mind, that's just having the dog for a trophy pet and I do not approve of that.  I see so much of that when driving down the road and it just makes you wonder why they have the animal.

In a perfect world, we would all be able to have them in and out with no problems.  My dogs do prefer outside (perhaps because it's what they are used to) but, so much more is happening outside for them than inside I believe...sights, sounds, smells, other animals.....  I just feel like inside, it's such an "artificial" environment for an animal.  After my husband has witnessed the amazing shedding these dogs go thru, I believe my dreams of having them in with me might have vanished.

Great idea Don but I have one up on you. I have a sound proof basement, so even when my dogs bark 24/7 from lack of exersize, my neighbors never hear. I only have to clean it up once a week, it's so cold down there, poop doesn't smell much and the pee just puddles up in the middle. Shop vacs work wonders. Only downside is the dogs squint when I let them out in the sun but I gotta let them have that fresh air on Sundays, we all go out for iceream then.

4Pack and Don, I think you guys are on the right track and I am so impressed I will be building my own similar torture er basement kennels.  Its really so much easier to train them when they become deprived.  I will be installing mega watt flashing lights and loud blaring rap music with extra bass to keep them on their toes.

Look at the Photos of Fred on this site and then tell me honestly that your Dogs living inside look better condition than he is

As i said people without the facilities for keeping dogs outside can but keep them in the house even if they prefer the Dogs to live out, That i see no wrong inat all, or even no wrong should a person choose for a dog to luive in the house

Regards the Wolves bit , thatwas bought up soly because of some people not thinking The Dogs living outside, not getting the same love and Treatment of Dogs living in the house, i have said what my Dogs get so the replies were a little silly to say the least

No one and i mean no one can give there Dogs more than i do and they live outside because i firmly believe they are happier doing so and there condition tells me that much

As for People thinking Dogs are social animals more to people than there own kind are under some sort of illiusion

Because all species will choose there own above all others if it comes down to the crunch and that includes Dogs

You can have a Dog with the owner thinking the animal dotes on he or she but if that same dog was given to another person who treats it with the same kindness then that dog will within a short space of time will do and dote on that person the same as its original owner

If this is not true then why do Dogs, working Dogs who are sold go on to work and be happy in there new homes and Thousands over the world pass hands every year, i expect many of you people have sold Dogs which go on and look up to there new owner just as it did yourself, and are just as happy once setgled in there new home

If they did not then there is a huge amount of unhappy Dogs in this world

Remember one important thing

Dogs are not Homo Sapiens, they are Canine and do not think or act as we humans do It is only some humans that think Dogs do

Steve

Perhaps if us humands acted the same as Dogs do then we would live in a better world, than we do now

You guys are just so funny.  Ho, ho, ho.......not cynically short for horror, horror, horror.  To keep it from becoming a touchy subject, MVF......why don't we let the dogs decide and offer them a choice.  Which poster 'ya think' they'd choose to live with? (lol)  Ho, horror, ho.....Oh...forgot........INSIDE

If given the choice between icecream or apple, I'd probably pick the icecream 99% of the time but that's not always a good thing. Choices for dogs? Please, you people probably don't give your own kids half the choices and spoiled shit your dogs have. Dogs are not people, why do we feel compelled to treat them as such? Because they don't back talk and love us unconditionally?

If given the choice my dog would rather lay on my couch all day eatting bon bons and giving anyone else who wants a sit, the evil eye. How long before the dominance issues show their ugly head again or my dog gets too fat to work? My female will come in but she would rather be outside in the grass, watching passers by. Nothing to look at or chase in the house, not without breaking stuff anyway. I'm outside enough to give them what attention they need. I for one don't want a clingy dog, wouldn't do so well in my sport of choice. I can't be his emotional crutch 24/7 and he has to deal with that. Some people like needy dogs and that's their perogative I guess (hi if you read his Lance).  I call those people "pet" people. Since when was the shepherd up the sheepdogs ass all the time? Doggy had to stay out all day tending sheep and was lucky if he got the night in and a pat on the head.

Oh boy, this is going down the wrong path from what I intended... in my first post I said "I think to each their own as long as they have protection from the elements. Probably is actually more healthy life style for them. I hate to see dogs outside tied 24/7 or dogs outside that have very little human interaction though, whats the point in having one when they live that way."

When steve1 brought up the issue of feeding raw and inside dogs my point to my second post was that my house is not centrally heated or cooled. Thereby making the inside temp not so artificial as some homes. I then also said in my second post ""Dogs for me are healther if they live outside in the fresh air" is probably the most accurate, as inside pollutants are said to be worse than outside in most places."

So how does this translate into inside dogs look better than ouside dogs or vice versa? Or that anyone in particulars dog living outside gets less attention? I did mention the dogs left tied 24/7 because I drive by one everyday who just whelped , this summer, a beautiful litter of mix breeds and raised them tied by the neck with a doghouse no bigger than a 2' x 2' inside diameter, all 9 of them!! That makes me sick, not people who keep them in a fenced yard with decent protection, walk them, train them etc.  Also not sure how dogs preferring their own kind and easily transfering loyalty to another owner pertains here. Dogs are pack animals as horses are herd animals. When you bring a puppy into your home it usually ends up looking to you as being the pack leader , whether the dog is inside or not.

Oh, and the part about wolves was brought up because it was insinuated that you can't feed raw and keep your dog inside too, because of this statement "You cannot look into this just for one way regards the Dog v Wolves", I just think you can.....

Okay,

I never read this post because by the heading I thought it was stupid.  I still think it's stupid but I did read all the responses.  My gosh, who cares where the dog is kept, as long as they are taken care of, worked, fed, and happy.  I've had dogs inside and out, and what do you feed have to do with it?  Geez, shit can sure get off track on here.  Don, your great!

Donna
