I used my steamer but it stunk like musty rug, after, even though no more water was being pulled up from the carpet , in the sight glass. I was so upset :( A friend told me to take baking soda, liberally cover the entire carpet, thickly, with it, rub it in as much as I could, and then sprinkle some more, close the door to the room and leave it closed up for 24 hours. I humored her, and did it, expecting it not to work. 24 hours later, I opened the door, expecting the smells to smack me right in the face, but the room smelled like the carpet was bran dnew! I vacuumed up the baking soda, and the room doesnt smell, at all, anymore :)

Hi Karmen,
Sorry to hear of your plight and losing one of your dogs.
Only a theory, maybe I am way off the mark. If he has a clean bill of health, is it possible he has a bit of anxiety. I have read literature before of dogs marking within the house when they have never marked before due to separation anxiety or some other sort of anxiety.
Is it possible that losing one of the members of the pack and taking on the role of Alpha is stressing him a bit and he is marking to try and make himself feel a bit more settled.
As I said I could be way off the mark but its only a theory. If it is the case he has a bit of anxiety tackling this then should resolve the problem.
I hope you can get it resolved.
Kindest regards

Baking soda will work well as Marj has said.
I'm usually the last person to suggest this since I'm not really crazy about kenneling GSD's, but I think this fellow would have to be mainly an outdoor dog if he doesn't change his ways. Neutering can't hurt, but it probably won't help an adult dog now that he's in the habit of marking inside the house; it might be impossible to stop him from doing it. If my choice would be a clean house that doesn't smell like dog urine or giving Bodie house priviledges, I'd have to opt for the clean, pee-free house , sorry Bodie. He's not sick, he's being a male is all. Or maybe you could confine him to a certain area where there are no big carpets or upholstered furniture? Never heard of the belly bands, but why not? Worth a try I think. Good luck!!!

Silbersee....CRACK ME UP. That was hysterical. ARen't they also known as 'Pig in a Poke' LOL
GSDalways...great observation. Very well could be. Like I said he was fine being second in command. He wasn't per say a wimpy submissive dog, just his personality he didn't really care Dante was in charge. Now taking on the Alpha roll could be him trying to always keep up that status and the only way he knows is by marking and when teh other dogs are around he feels the stress to continue.
Blitzen...Wiener Wrap LOL. not belly band Yes, I think he'll be going outside during the day. He just can't be trusted. He can come in at night cause he sleeps in my room with me but he'll have to be outside during the day. I just can't have marking in my house. Love him to death but stinky carpet is not an option.
Thank again for all your advice, it's been great.

The things we do for our dogs............... I often think I could be living on the French Riviera had I not been born a dog nerd. It's truly a curse.

Another supporter of Natural's Miracle. It's the only thing I've found to get pee-smell out of carpets, upholstry, the car after the puppies broke out of their crate while I was paying for gas (never knew a pile of puppies could wreck such havoc in a Jeep in such a short period of time!).
It even works on cat pee, which is probably the hardest-to-remove pee type there is. I haven't found anything else that even compares for removing pee, regardless of how fresh it is. Some things only work on fresh pee. This stuff works on those old stealth-spots lurking in carpet fibers.
