I guess when I said pedigree, I meant a PROVEN pedigree. ie...progeny that has proven itself...worthy of having progeny in all terms...health, nerves, workability.
I have both lines and look at the dogs in the pedigree personally whenever possible. I will also watch the dogs work...sire and dam, and follow progeny as well. The dog for me, needs to be the total package...whether it is for PPD or sport...but it MUST work!!! I don't mean pedigree the way some say...13 VA dogs and 50 V dogs...means nothing!!! Sometimes that low V dog is actually better than that VA dog.
Nice topic by the way.....very enlightening.

IMO I personally look at the individual dog rather than anything else. I agree it all really depends on your purposes on if or how much a pedigree or title should or will matter in what dog you'd choose and what you'd be willing to pay. If you are a breeder then the titles and pedigree in most cases is the initial thing you're focussed on. If you are a sport person the title will certainly be a factor in your choice as the dog is already accustomed to sport style training whereas a PPD has a totally differently type of training/job.
I myself wouldn't necessarily pay more for one or the other because I've seen real shitters with a title and I've seen dogs being sold as PP that I wouldn't take for free. Seeing the dog perform is what is necessary to fully asses it's true worth. I will pay more for the "total package" with or without a title; base my decission on the dogs training and ability.
I prefer the PP dogs myself so maybe I'm partial but the training is more involved IMO, staging different scenarios, different places, distractions, weapons, surfaces, expossure to all elements in every day life without a routine, and constant total control. Would I pay more for an untitled well bred PP dog that is serious enough and full of piss and vinegar one minute but can turn it off and hang out with the family, kids the next over a titled well bred dog that looks good on a competition field but may or may not bite for real?? ABSOLUTELY!
"WHy would I spend 12,000.00 for that much experise of training to guard my 150,000.00 home and two kids and a wife??"
Because your kids and wife should be PRICELESS and if you have a real situation you NEED a PPD I'd suggest you sell the jet ski, dirt bike or whatever else you have and go get yourself one because $12,000 to protect your family is worth it's weight in gold.
Mine are never for sale for any amount of money.

Agar,
You are absolutely right about that your family is priceless. I know people who would rather spend thousands of dollars on security alarms, guns and other stuff than one dog that will do all that and more. But you know $10,000 for security is too much but the $65.000 dollar Hummer or the $50,000 ski boat in the garage is an investment.
My personal opinion and not just because I train PPD is a PPD all the way. See people dont realize that they can have the weekend warrior sport dog with the 24/7 protection of a PPD. You just have too know what you want and know the right people.
Now how about this question: Can you have a true PPD and it also be a sch3, and if so why are we not breeding more dogs for that accomplishment?
I appreciate all the responses and lets keep it up.....

"...Can you have a true PPD and it also be a sch3, and if so why are we not breeding more dogs for that accomplishment?..."
Well I dived in on the rest what the heck.
Perhaps the reason you don't see more of this is the people with Schutzhund dogs already have a deterent and for most people that's enough. How many actually want to take the time and effort to fully train for both? And most people that "need" a PPD only want a PPD, they don't see the sense in Schutzhund. (Agar, I know you have both. This is not meant for you. You are the exception not the rule. And thank you for pointing out to AhSighEE that family is priceless)
I am not saying a good GSD can't be both, they're smart dogs after all. I have four GSD's, one pure pet who will still alert on and challenge a stranger coming to the house, two I'm working in Schutzhund, and one who is my take everywhere dog. Two of the four I think could be trained as PPD's. I really don't have the time to add PP training on top of it all, as much as I would like to. Besides, not many would be stupid enough to come to my house or camp site. High enough maybe.....
Last but not least. It's hard enough finding a safe and sane Schutzhund club with a good TD. How the heck does a person find a good PP trainer? As has been mentioned there are no set tests for PPD titles and excercises, a PP trainer can make any claim they desire on how good they are.
I think I gave way beyond 2-cents worth on this thread....

Awesome points,
You stated "Perhaps the reason you don't see more of this is the people with Schutzhund dogs already have a deterent and for most people that's enough" The only flaw I see in that arguemnt and it being one that is given often is why have a .357 with no bullets. Yeah the gun may scare off 99.9% of the bad guys but should we not plan on the worse not the best case scenario. I guess I have this point of view because I have come across people while in uniform pointed my gun at them and they look at you like your holding a water gun, now the fight is on and your gun wont help you now. Just my own experience.
What if you could have a sch3 and a PPD all in one and yes the training is done correctly how much would someone pay for this? This would be a working line dog.
