I just gave my pup some raw chicken backs.  I want to graduate to chicken wings. Is this the best way to start out?

When we go to the butchers he give us a mixed bag of what's available.  The beef shins usually have a reasonably high level of sinue on them along with some fat.  The faeces from the first day are normally ok, but due to the level of Marrow in the bone and the amount of bone chewing needed to obtain that marrow we do normally get some of the whiter crumbly faeces, however this is the dog's choice to continue chewing to this point and other food is also provided.  My vet has assured me that as long as this crumbly state is only for a couple of days there is no danger to the dog.  He always states that dogs cant and shouldnt turn cookers on!

If you give dogs raw carrots it goes straight through them and some of the bone does this too.  Smaller bones such as chicken and lamb necks has never left any evidence in the faeces so I guess the stomach acid and other digestive juices are strong enough to distroy anything that wasnt chomped up in the first place.

I just want to make sure that I am doing this right! I NEVER want to do this wrong doing this or hurt the pup!

I buy whole chickens, chop them into quarters, and hand them to my dog.  I have yet to see bone fragments in his stool.

i recommend reading dr lonsdale's books, among other things he talks about the important differences between raw & cooked, you can find them at www.rawmeatybones.com

Guess I'm silly.... I figure... If in DOUBT.... DON'T.

so I give marrow bones fairly often to the gang... but chicken/ duck/ turkey bones go in the garbage.

i feel this way about kibble. with the high rate of bloat & food poisoning in kibble fed dogs i worry, so "i just don't" feed it. instead i stick with raw because from where i sit the risk is far less.  with raw the pro's far far outweigh any possible con's (btw i have never experienced any con's in 12+ yrs of feeding raw); imo this is not so with kibble - but this is certainly jmo - each person has to make the choice/take the risks they can live.
